PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 17 – State Rep. Morgan Cephas, chair of the House Philadelphia Democratic Delegation, along with fellow members, today thanked city officials for the immediate response and support provided to an estimated 30 immigrants sent to Philadelphia from Texas on a bus that arrived outside the 30th Street Station Wednesday morning. The delegation said its top concern and priority is the welfare of the group of migrants and highlighted that the key words against the backdrop of migrations are collaboration and solidarity. “The most important aspect to take into consideration is to make this group of people feel safe. We all have the right to feel protected and respected; we are talking about a fundamental right.” The delegation applauded the city officials for the humane response and emphasized that once again Philadelphia has proved why it is referred to as the “City of Brotherly Love.’ “We are proud to say that Philadelphia is one of very few sanctuary cities in the country. The Texas officials did not even coordinate with the city, but we opened our doors to them, and we are ready to offer shelter, health care and essential resources.” The delegation also stressed that although Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has stated that he will continue sending buses to other cities, because he understands that the government keeps allowing illegal immigrants, this is far from that case. “The individuals we welcomed are not Read more

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 12 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., released the following statement in response to the early morning shooting of multiple swat officers in Richard Allen: “Just yesterday at a Roxborough news conference I thanked gathered law enforcement for the critical work they do. This morning’s shooting shows how dangerous that work can be as well. My deepest prayers are with the officers who were hurt and their families. “Every time a member of law enforcement puts on their uniform as my aunt used to do, they take on huge risks to try and keep us all safe. This gun crime crisis is a scourge on our city and I know has shaken the Richard Allen community to its foundations. This violence must end!!” Kenyatta previously laid out a three-point plan to address the gun crime crisis: Declaring a state of emergency on gun violence. Passing stalled gun safety legislation. Addressing root causes of violence and investing in the youth. Read more
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 11 – State Reps. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., and Pamela A. DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., and state Sen. Vince Hughes, D-Montgomery/Phila., announced $500,000 in funding for Roxborough High School today for security enhancements. The legislators were joined by School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Tony B. Watlington, Sr., Ed.D., Councilman Curtis Jones and Roxborough High School Principal Kristin Smalley. Kenyatta, DeLissio and Hughes were able to secure the funding a week after the mass shooting at Roxborough High School that took the life of one student and left four others injured following a junior varsity football scrimmage. The legislators commented on this funding. “This for me is not a moment of celebration. Nicholas is gone and four other students will never be the same. This is the least we can do to help make students and families at Roxborough feel a tiny bit safer in light of this tragedy,” Kenyatta said. “We must do everything possible to make sure that another parent or guardian doesn’t have to grieve the loss of their child. We allocated $300 million in the last budget for additional supports to communities to address the gun crime crisis, but I’m committed to doing more.” “Nothing will bring back Nicholas. Nothing will take away the pain his family is feeling. Nothing will fully right this Read more
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 5 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., and state Sen. Vince Hughes, D-Montgomery/Phila., were able to help secure $500,000 in state funds to assist Roxborough High School with security enhancements. This funding comes on the heels of the mass shooting last week following a junior varsity football scrimmage that took the life of one student and left four others injured. The funding comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. “This past week has been agonizing for the victims and their families. It’s also been a gut punch for me and the entire Roxborough community.” Kenyatta said. “Our children should not go to school in fear of losing their life. It is my hope that this funding will help prevent another tragedy like this from happening again. I’m grateful for my caucus leadership and Representative Pam DeLissio for their support.” “Nicolas Elizalde should still be alive today. The four other boys wounded should be worried about winning their next football game, but instead are traumatized as they recover from being shot,” said Hughes. “As a community, we need to put the guns down, and we need to make sure our young people are safe. That’s why it was so important to partner with Representative Kenyatta right away to get Roxborough High School $500,000 to increase its security efforts. We cannot let this happen again and I am Read more

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 28 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., issued the following statement on the shooting that took place at his alma mater, Roxborough High School yesterday afternoon. “The last time I was at my alma mater Roxborough High School, I was delivering the commencement address. Today I instead went to meet with students and staff reeling from yesterday’s mass shooting. I’m gutted and angry for these families — and the school community I so love,” Kenyatta said. “The family of the young man whose life was stolen is showing a level of courage and resilience that they shouldn’t have to muster. “The victims who’ve survived will also never be the same. “They join a disgracefully long list of other families who know the pain of gun crimes. “As I toured the school I was struck by a board in the lunch room. This ‘Dream Wall’ is replete with the hopes of students. “One entry stuck out in its simplicity and its tragedy. “This student wrote that they wanted to live past 30. It was a punch in the stomach. “As an elected official the lack of sustained action on reducing gun crimes and violence is a stain. This should be the least partisan thing we do — keep our kids alive. “Just living shouldn’t be a dream for our kids. It’s disgraceful that it is. “We can do more and we must.” Read more
