PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 18 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., today responded to what he says is troubling data from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health’s database on Monkeypox cases and vaccine distribution. The first published data set shows that nearly 90% of the cases in Philadelphia identify as cisgender male, nearly 50% of cases are between the ages of 30 and 39, and more than twice as many cases report race as Black or African American than White. More than 93% of vaccines have been administered to men, 43% of doses have been administered to residents between the ages of 30 and 39, and 58% of doses have been administered to people who report their race as White. Kenyatta describes these statistics as “troubling.” “When I spoke at a press conference about Monkeypox, I warned everybody that this virus can affect everybody,” Kenyatta said. “Now we are seeing that it is disproportionately affecting those most marginalized, such as Black and LGBTQIA+ communities. This is very troubling, because these communities were some of the hardest hit by COVID-19.” Kenyatta continued, “We must create equity in the vaccine distribution to ensure that those most vulnerable and at-risk are protected as much as possible. I do give credit to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health for recognizing the need to vaccinate those most at-risk, and I am willing to Read more
HARRISBURG, Aug. 16 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., praised the executive order Gov. Tom Wolf signed today to protect LGBTQIA+ Pennsylvanians from so-called conversion therapy. “The idea of conversion therapy is a misnomer; it is conversion abuse . This harmful practice is junk science and has not place in the commonwealth. Pennsylvania is better when it is fairer, and today’s order helps to move us in that direction, particularly for our LGBTQIA+ young people. I applaud Governor Wolf for signing this historic executive order to ban conversion abuse in Pennsylvania.” A survey on LGBTQIA+ Youth Mental Health by The Trevor Project shows that LGBTQIA+ youth are at increased risk for negative mental health outcomes. The survey results show that 45% of LGBTQIA+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year; 73% of LGBTQ youth reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety; and 58% reported symptoms of depression. Additionally, 36% of LGBTQ youth reported they have been physically threatened or harmed due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. “LGBTQIA+ individuals deserve to be treated with respect and dignity,” Kenyatta said. “As one of just three LGBTQIA+ members of the state legislature, I will continue to push for legislation such as the PA Fairness Act to protect LGBTQIA+ Pennsylvanians from discrimination and to codify the governor’s action today.” Wolf’s Executive Read more

HARRISBURG, July 8 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., praised the fact that homosexuality has been removed from the PA Crimes Code by the PA General Assembly. The bill now awaits the governor’s signature. “Removing homosexuality from the Crimes Code was about a couple centuries overdue, but a big deal nevertheless” Kenyatta said. “As one of three openly LGBTQ members of the General Assembly, I am happy that this is finally happening in Pennsylvania after a years-long fight.” Kenyatta continued, “It is my hope that this will be another step towards destigmatizing LGBTQ+ individuals and protecting the community from possible future court decisions.” “When Justice Thomas concurred in the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade he mentioned Lawrence v. Texas, which ruled that sodomy laws are unconstitutional, as a decision the court should overturn. Should the court do that and had this language remained in the Crimes Code it would have presented a grave threat to LGBTQ Pennsylvanians,” Kenyatta said. “Today we remove that cloud of shame and fear to create a Pennsylvania that is fair for all.” Read more
HARRISBURG, July 8 – State Reps. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., and Jennifer O’Mara, D-Delaware, are applauding the inclusion of the hunger free campus initiative they have championed in Harrisburg in this year’s state budget. Kenyatta and O’Mara were the lead co-sponsors of the program. O’Mara said the following: “One in nine people in our state are struggling with hunger. Furthermore, between one-third and one-half of college students are food-insecure. Representative Kenyatta and I recognized this problem over a year ago and introduced the Hunger Free Campus Act to ensure that every student can easily access nutritious food. We are immensely proud to see $1 million dollars finally reserved in this year’s budget to address this crisis that touches every corner of the commonwealth. As a first-generation college student who worked three jobs and took out extra student loans to be able to afford tuition, textbooks, and food, I know how necessary this initiative is to Pennsylvania’s students.” Kenyatta agreed with O’Mara. “One in nine people in our state are struggling with hunger. Representative O’Mara and I recognized this problem over a year ago and introduced the Hunger Free Campus Act to ensure that every student can easily access nutritious food.” He continued. “We engaged stakeholders, Read more

HARRISBURG, June 24 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., issued the following statement on the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade: “Knowing that this was coming has done little to prepare me for the anger I’m feeling right now. HARRISBURG, June 8 – State Reps. Malcolm Kenyatta and Chris Rabb, both D-Phila., have introduced two pieces of legislation that would ban sedition amongst elected officials in Pennsylvania. The first piece of legislation is a joint resolution proposing an amendment to the Constitution of Pennsylvania. It would prohibit any person convicted of seditious conspiracy against the United States from being eligible for elected office in Pennsylvania. It would also remove civil officers upon conviction of seditious conspiracy against the United States. The second piece of legislation would create a new offense and assess penalties under the Pennsylvania Crimes Code for seditious conspiracy against the Commonwealth. “Misinformation has serious and dangerous consequences. Last year we saw thousands of seditionists storm the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. because they were told the 2020 presidential election was stolen,” Kenyatta said. “We cannot allow individuals who’ve engaged in seditious violence against our state and country to be in positions of public trust.” “The misinformation that is being spread by far-right Republicans is radicalizing people to commit seditious acts of violence and treason,” Rabb said. “To ensure these radical acts of violence do not continue to occur, there need to be consequences for elected officials who spread misinformation.” Read more
