Curry: Supreme Court decision will have severe consequences

(Jun 24, 2022)

UPPER DARBY, June 24– State Rep. Gina H. Curry issued the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision: “I am heartbroken and disturbed following the court’s decision that changes the entire nature of women’s health care in the United States of America. This is a tragic and dangerous day in our nation’s history. “Reversing Roe v. Wade will not end abortions but will, in turn, have severe consequences on low income, marginalized and more specifically Black and Brown women and families throughout our country. Abortion bans lead to worse health outcomes for pregnant women, people and babies, with increased rates of maternal mortality and financial hardships that harm families. “The court’s decision means a woman’s choice to decide her own health care needs is now up to each individual state. This decreases equity and leaves a person’s zip code to decide their care instead of their health care provider. For now, abortion remains legal in Pennsylvania. “I will continue to fight to protect equity, safety and security in women’s health care rights in Pennsylvania.” Read more

The elected officials collected the items during a month-long donation drive in May. Donation boxes were placed throughout several locations in Delaware County, including both officials’ district offices, Five Points Coffee Shop in Upper Darby, and the Ridley, Lansdowne, and Springfield YMCAs. “Both Rep. Not only were we able to collect and deliver more items than expected, but we also hosted a virtual webinar on period poverty to raise awareness about the public health issue.” Delivery of the donated feminine hygiene products to the WIC office comes just as the nation is experiencing a tampon shortage caused by supply chain issues. Senators Kearney and Cappelletti, Rep. Curry Partner with The Foundation for Delaware County to Shed Light on Period Poverty

(Jun 01, 2022)

SPRINGFIELD, PA – May 31, 2022 – Senators Tim Kearney (D-Delaware/Chester), Amanda Cappelletti (D-Montgomery/Delaware), and state Rep. Gina H Curry (D-Delaware), in partnership with The Foundation for Delaware County on Thursday, hosted a community discussion on Understanding the Impact of Period Poverty— And How You Can Help. The virtual event featured four speakers, including Senator Cappelletti and Rep. Curry, and focused on raising awareness about the topic and identifying ways lawmakers and the greater community can assist in helping to address the public health issue. Offering opening remarks, Senator Kearney highlighted the need for the discussion. “There is so much stigma surrounding openly talking about menstrual cycles and equity,” said Senator Kearney. “I recognize that people within my district are impacted by period poverty that’s why Rep. Curry and I are currently having a Feminine Hygiene Products Donation Drive to support local women and girls. Education and action are synonymous with change, and I hope we can start to look for ways to help others experiencing period poverty after this discussion concludes.” Senator Cappelletti, who serves as co-chair of the Women’s Health Caucus and is a co-sponsor of Senate Bill 602 , legislation that would require schools and public agencies to make menstrual hygiene products available at no cost reiterated Kearney’s sentiment.
