Op-Ed: Mail-in voting is safe and secure

(Aug 24, 2020)

There is nothing more sacred to our democracy than the right of each American citizen to vote for their representatives in government. Perhaps just as important is the confidence our citizens place in our voting systems that determine who will represent ALL of us. That is why it is imperative that we institute policies that secure each citizen’s right to vote – while safeguarding against fraud and those who wish to undermine our system of elections. Mail-in Voting is Safe, Secure and Should Not Be a Political Issue

(Aug 19, 2020)

There is nothing more sacred to our democracy than the right of each American citizen to vote for their representatives in government. Perhaps just as important is the confidence our citizens place in our voting systems that determine who will represent ALL of us. That is why it is imperative that we institute policies that secure each citizen’s right to vote – while safeguarding against fraud and those who wish to undermine our system of elections. Mail-in voting, available in Pennsylvania since this year’s primary election, offers another option to make your voice heard without worrying about finding time to make it to the polls or the weather on election day. During a health emergency, this option provides a safe alternative to in-person voting and is widely available across the country. In fact, according to the Washington Post , 76 percent of eligible voters – 180 million people – are currently eligible to vote by mail in the Nov. 3 general election. Disturbingly, some of the very people who utilize vote by mail are trying to cast doubts on its security . That is why it’s important to remember that while no excuse mail-in voting may be new to most Pennsylvanians, it has been used by the U.S. military since Republicans implemented it during the Civil War . Five states now primarily conduct their elections by mail – Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah and Washington – while another 28 states allow Read more

Pashinski announces $400,000 in grants for local water improvement projects

(Aug 17, 2020)

HARRISBURG, Aug. 17 – State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, today announced the approval by the Commonwealth Financing Authority of two PA Small Water and Sewer fund grants totaling $400,000 to Hanover Township and Mountaintop Area Joint Sanitary Authority. The funds will go toward two separate projects, including: $100,000 to Hanover Township for Phase 3 of the Solomon Creek Interceptor rehabilitation. $300,000 to the Mountaintop Area Joint Sanitary Authority to replace the sanitary sewer system for Glen Summit development in Fairview Township. “Each of these grants will help to fund important projects improving the quality of our water and our lives locally,” Pashinski said. “Once completed, these efforts will reduce pollution and provide safe and reliable service for local users. I’m truly appreciative to my Senate colleagues for their support for these projects, as well as Governor Tom Wolf and his administration for seeing the value in investing these funds in our area.” Hanover Township’s grant will go toward the rehabilitation of 560 linear feet of an existing sewer interceptor along Ferry Road that is over a century old and in failing condition. The improvements will increase the interceptor’s capacity, reduce the infiltration of groundwater, reduce ongoing maintenance needs and provide more reliable sewer services for residents. Madden, Pashinski and Schlossberg discuss legislative priorities for a ‘Just Recovery Plan’

(Jun 18, 2020)

HARRISBURG, June 18 – State Reps. Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, and Mike Schlossberg, D-Lehigh, held a “ PA Needs a Just Recovery” Zoom press event to discuss the steps the Pennsylvania General Assembly needs to take to create a just recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and to heed the call for racial justice demanded by Pennsylvanians. A Just Recovery for all Pennsylvanians includes: Racial justice and police reforms. Making sure that Pennsylvanians returning to work have the resources they need to protect themselves from COVID-19. Instituting additional small business stimulus packages. Making sure schools and students have the resources, including internet access, to facilitate proper socially distant learning. Working towards providing quality housing for every Pennsylvanian. Instituting tax fairness initiatives. Continuing to ensure that all Pennsylvanians have access to the vote so their voices can be heard. Madden said House Democrats are determined to work together, not just to protect and reward frontline workers during this crisis, but to ensure that everyone -- with no exceptions -- can secure fair pay, a safe workplace and to be able to stay in their homes. “Our constituents are undergoing record levels of unemployment and hourly work reductions, and they now have to face the grueling reality of paying rent,” Read more

Pashinski, House Democrats put Pennsylvanians’ health and safety first

(Apr 17, 2020)

WILKES-BARRE, April 17 – State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, is calling for the state legislature to stop playing political games and to focus on policies that put the health and safety of Pennsylvanians first. “At a time when people are dying every day, while doctors, nurses and first responders are struggling to get proper PPE, our state legislature’s sole focus should be on supporting our frontline heroes and stopping this pandemic,” Pashinski said. “Instead, the Republican proposals forced through the legislature this week along party-lines would rush Pennsylvanians back to work just when the curve is beginning to flatten.” Pashinski said many of the same legislators voting to send Pennsylvanians to work in potentially dangerous working conditions without proper personal protective equipment cast those votes remotely or while wearing PPE themselves. While he agrees the state needs to be ready to reopen the economy, Pashinski said the legislature must put the lives of Pennsylvanians first when making these important decisions. “Let me be clear: my colleagues and I want businesses to reopen,” Pashinski said. “We want life to return to as close to normal as possible, as soon as possible. But that will not happen if we ignore the arithmetic and our health care experts by prematurely reopening large swaths of our society right when we are turning the tide. Instead, we can Read more

Pashinski requests consideration for alternative COVID-19 testing site

(Apr 15, 2020)

WILKES-BARRE, April 15 – State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, today requested that the Pennsylvania Department of Health find an alternate location to the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre Township for its drive-through COVID-19 testing site, which DOH has scheduled to open Sunday. “I have the honor of serving the people of the 121 st District, which includes the Wilkes-Barre Township Community,” Pashinski said. “That is why I have requested that the Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency meet with, and address the concerns of, our local officials before making a final determination on the location of their testing site. It is imperative that I emphasize the concerns of Wilkes-Barre Township’s officials and residents about the possibility of those being tested possibly having access to many commercial sites within a half mile of the arena. Their concerns are legitimate and demonstrate a sincere sense of fear of the expansion of this virus to themselves, their families and their neighbors and deserve to be addressed.” Pashinski’s request follows a conversation with local and state officials outlining the testing process, which will follow best practices from the Montgomery County testing site. Officials emphasized that this is not intended to be a mass testing site and that the arena would be used for prioritized testing for first responders, health care workers and Read more
