Pashinski & Madden introduce bill to make PA Preferred Organic Program permanent in the state

(Dec 13, 2021)

HARRISBURG, Dec. 13 – State Reps. Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, and Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, have introduced legislation that would make the PA Preferred Organic Program a trademark in Pennsylvania. Since 2019, the PA Preferred Organic Program has been used to increase market opportunities for Pennsylvania farmers. Because of this program, Madden said, Pennsylvania ranks third nationally in organic agriculture sales. “I have an organic farm in my district, Pocono Organics , that provides not only a variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables to purchase but has a litany of programs for children of all ages, veterans and adults,” Madden said. “PA Preferred Organic businesses grow all foods under the sun that are healthy for us, and that alone should be a reason to make the program permanent in our commonwealth.” Pashinski, Democratic chair of the House Agriculture & Rural Affairs Committee , said Pennsylvania has 1,055 certified organic farms and more than 93,000 acres of certified organic land in the state. “Pennsylvanians are increasingly seeking a greater quality, quantity and variety of organic foods at their markets and grocery stores,” Pashinski said. “By making Pennsylvania-produced organic products even more readily available, our farmers can continue to benefit from this rapidly expanding market.” Pashinski noted the program would not compete with other state producers but instead Read more

Rep. Hill-Evans and colleagues announce 'Diaper Need Awareness Week' in Pennsylvania.

(Sep 27, 2021)

HARRISBURG, Sept. 27 – A group of House Democrat legislators unveiled their plan to raise awareness to a growing epidemic of many families and seniors on fixed incomes who are unable to afford disposable diapers and undergarments. State Reps. Carol Hill-Evans, D-York; Tina Davis, D-Bucks; Kyle Mullins, D-Lackawanna; and Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, were joined by their legislative colleagues to announce their diaper drive campaign. “Affordable and equitable access to clean diapers establishes a healthy foundation for every infant, while incontinence products help our older adults with their needs,” Hill-Evans said. “Throughout the fall legislative session, I will continue to advocate for my bills that are currently in the House Health Committee – bills that address basic needs and help families with financial burdens for the 1 in 3 U.S. families that experience diaper need.” Davis said it’s heartbreaking to think that a child could remain in a soiled diaper just because there are not enough diapers to go around. “Diaper Need Awareness Week should serve as a reminder to all of us that a lack of diapers for infants and toddlers, and incontinence products for adults, is a public health issue that needs to be addressed,” Davis said. “A third of families are struggling to provide this essential need, an alarming statistic considering we are talking about the basic needs of both seniors and children Read more

The Infrastructure Crisis Meets the 'Perfect Storm': Time for a National Infrastructure Bank!

(Sep 24, 2021)

Decades of underfunding our infrastructure, of relying upon a patchwork and reactive approaches has slammed into reality. Our nation faces unprecedented extreme weather events and other challenges from coast to coast which threaten our well-being. Thus far, the response of Congress has been inadequate. Where the need for new infrastructure investment is $5 trillion or more, the Senate’s “Infrastructure and Jobs Act” proposes just $550 billion of new spending. While we support this, it lands far short of the mark. We, the undersigned, are rallying our citizens to demand that Congress respond to this crisis in a way which is appropriate: The establishment of a large, $5 trillion National Infrastructure Bank (NIB), as outlined in HR 3339, which is before the current session of Congress. This $5 trillion public bank does not rely upon the appropriations process. It does not require new federal taxes and will not increase our deficit. By repurposing existing Treasury debt, as was done previously in U.S. history, it will finance everything we need, and quickly. We will be able to build multiple layers at the same time, such as water, sewer, rail, power, all of which inhabit the same space. Infrastructure requires concerted federal action. We need a new power grid, a new high speed rail system, and large-scale water projects like those last erected under President Franklin Roosevelt. The impact of Hurricane Ida on Pennsylvania exposed the Read more
