Lansdowne, PA – Acting Secretary of Health and Pennsylvania Physician General Dr. Denise Johnson today joined fellow state leaders and patients during a visit to an organization serving expectant mothers and families to address Black maternal health disparities and maternal health deserts across Pennsylvania. “As a board-certified OBGYN who spent decades caring for people during their pregnancies, I understand the importance of working harder to provide access to quality maternal care services for everyone during pregnancy and afterward,” said Dr. Johnson. “The latest data show that in Pennsylvania, more than 105,000 women 18-44 years of age live in counties with little or no obstetric care. Curry announced today the Student Run Emergency Housing Unit of Philadelphia (SREHUP) has been awarded $750,000 in Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program funds for its Breaking Bread Community project in the 164 th Legislative District. SREHUP’s Breaking Bread Community project will be a homelessness eradication resource center, located in Upper Darby Township, proving services and housing help for anyone who may need them. It will also include a night shelter for at least 30 individuals. The project site is a three-story building and will require: A full renovation to provide a day use community area and offices on the first floor. Sleeping spaces on the second and third floors. New heating, air conditioning, electrical and fire alarm infrastructure. New interiors and finishes. New bathrooms on every floor. Improvements to the existing elevator. “The Student Run Emergency Housing Unit of Philadelphia is doing great work across the region to make sure those who are in need, are taken care of during the most extreme weather and throughout the year,” said Curry. “We are currently experiencing a crisis of people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.
