Parker brings in $2.5 million in state funding for district

State Rep. Darisha Parker affirmed her commitment to uplift her community by securing $2.5 million for community gathering spaces in her legislative district. “Uplifting our community is one of my biggest priorities as a state representative,” Parker said. “This funding will go a long way to help provide youth with positive activities and spaces for us to come together for the betterment of our neighborhood.” The community spaces awarded funding include: Golaski Labs Community Hub - $500,000 Happy Hollow Playground - $1 million Nicetown Sport Court - $500,000 UAC PNC North Broad Community Connection Center - $500,000 The funding was awarded through the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. The program grants for the design, acquisition, and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects. RACP projects have a regional impact and generate substantial increases or maintain current levels of employment, tax revenues, or other measures of economic activity. RACP projects are state-funded projects that cannot obtain primary funding under other state programs. Read more

NEWLY LISTED PROGRAMS Department of Community and Economic Development: Mixed-Use Housing Development Pilot Program Who May Apply: Municipalities, Economic Development Organizations, Redevelopment Authorities, Municipal Authorities, Industrial Development Authorities, For-Profit organizations. Use: Mixed-use site development, conversion projects, rehabilitation projects, a combination of the three afore-mentioned projects. Funds: $10 million in PA Sites funding has been allocated for this program. There is no limit on the amount of grant funding that may be awarded to an applicant. Application Deadline: December 6, 2024 More information: DCED Website Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs: Recovery Support Services (RSS) Who May Apply: Applicant must have at least two years of experience as of July 1, 2024, providing RSS and demonstrate the capacity to provide RSS to individuals in recovery from opioid use disorder (OUD) and other concurrent substance use disorder (SUD). Rep. Parker continues to support recreation centers with $817,100 in state funding

Affirming her commitment to creating healthy outdoor spaces for the community to enjoy, state Rep. Darisha Parker announced today that $817,100 in state funding has been awarded to update several recreation centers in her legislative district. “Updating community spaces, making them ADA-compliant, and the installation of new equipment for additional activities is an integral part of uplifting and empowering our neighborhoods,” Parker said. “Our recreation centers provide a safe space for the neighbors to gather and engage in activities that promote health, well-being and a sense of community.” The recreation centers awarded include: Nicetown Sports Court $250,000 Cherashore Playground $250,000 The Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia $117,100 Happy Hollow Playground $200,000 The Statewide Local Share Account funding comes from the Pennsylvania Racehorse Development and Gaming Act, which provides for the distribution of gaming revenues through the Commonwealth Financing Authority to support projects in the public interest within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Parker secures $1 million grant for Happy Hollow Recreation Center

State Rep. Darisha parker, today announced that Happy Hallow Recreation Center was awarded a $1 million grant to upgrade their facilities. “Philadelphia’s recreation centers provide a safe alternative for youth to participate in structured programs instead of wandering the streets,” Parker said. “This investment will go a long way to help foster community connections and give our youth hope.” The funding will help Happy Hollow become a digital access hub for residents who cannot access broadband internet as well as a heating and cooling center for residents in need. “This is such an important tool for the fight against gun violence,” Parker said. Happy Hollow Rec. Center is the oldest recreation center in Philadelphia and has served as a starting place for professional players in the National Basketball Association. The Multi-Purpose Community Facilities Program is funded pursuant to the Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund, established by Section 604 of the Social Security Act, as added by Section 9901 of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) administers the Facilities Program in accordance with U.S. Treasury guidelines and Act 96 of 2021. Read more

Funds: Awards may range from $2,500 to $20,000 for fire/rescue companies and $2,500 to $15,000 for EMS companies. Rep. Parker applauds Gov. Shapiro for closing gap in women’s healthcare

Darisha Parker, D-Phila., made the following statement regarding the $3 million in state funding made available for schools to purchase menstrual products: “Menstrual equity happens when barriers to obtaining products are broken,” Parker said. “The lack of access to menstrual products can cause more problems than embarrassment. When women are forced to use unhygienic products such as socks, newspaper or old t-shirts, it can cause serious and lifelong health problems. “This funding will empower students to complete their education without fear of sickness or embarrassment. I am incredibly thankful for First Lady Lori Shapiro’s advocacy for women and her willingness to listen to women’s health experts like Lynette Medley, founder of the nation’s first menstrual health hub, The Spot Period, about possible solutions to achieve menstrual equity for all. “I’m so grateful for Governor Shapiro’s $3 million allocation to help students in Pennsylvania live their lives freely and maintain their health and dignity. “This is the first step, we still have more work to do. Parker’s bill to improve maternal and child health outcomes passes PA House

Legislation authored by state Rep. Darisha Parker that would establish the Maternal Home Visiting Act passed the PA House of Representatives today. The legislation (H.B. 1425) would direct the state Department of Human Services to develop a five-year plan comprised of evidence-based steps that are proven to reduce negative health outcomes, prevent abuse and neglect, reduce crime and to provide parenting classes. “My biggest priority as a state lawmaker is the health and wellbeing of new and expanding Pennsylvania families,” Parker said. “Young families have enough burdens trying to navigate the new and unknown journey of parenthood; it’s our responsibility to support these families by providing resources that studies show help them thrive.” Parker said that Pennsylvania is eligible for federal funding to offer Maternal Home visits and she looks forward to working with the Department of Human Services to implement the program if it becomes law for all eligible families in the commonwealth.
