Jan. 15 e-mail: Recognizing Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service Next Week

MLK Jr. Day Office Hours

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20, my Abington office will be closed. Most other state/local government offices will also be closed, so be sure to check their holiday hours before traveling somewhere.

On Monday, I encourage everyone to reflect on the profound impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy and the importance of service to others. Whether it's volunteering, supporting local initiatives, or spreading kindness, every act of service brings us closer to the dream of equality and justice. Remember, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"

Anyone interested in participating in Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service can check out some volunteer projects offered by Abington Library. I also encourage you to reach out to your favorite organizations in our community and ask how you can lend a helping hand.

EMS Study Presentation

County residents are invited to attend the upcoming public presentations of the EMS Study Findings. These sessions will provide an in-depth overview of the study and its findings, offering valuable insights into the state and future of the Emergency Medical Services System in Montgomery County. Attendees have the option to participate in person at the Public Safety Training Campus (1175 Conshohocken Road, Conshohocken, PA 19428) or virtually.

Preregistration is not required for online attendance. The above links will be activated on the day of each presentation.

SEPTA Work in Abington and Glenside

Plus, do you need to renew your pass?

As part of SEPTA's continuing efforts to bring its bridge structures into a state of good repair, SEPTA's contractor is scheduled to perform work on the SEPTA bridge over Easton Road and the SEPTA bridge over Keswick Avenue in Cheltenham and Abington townships between March and early June of 2025. Click here for more information.

One other note for SEPTA riders - if you plan on going to the Flower Show or the Auto Show, NOW is the time to get or renew your Senior SEPTA pass. They expire every four years! Check the expiration date on your card. It may take up to four weeks or more for the card to be mailed to your house.

Shapiro Administration Implements First Statewide, Real-Time Public Transit Service Tracker System in the Nation, Improving Rider Experience and Service Reliability

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that the Fixed Route Intelligent Transportation System (FRITS) has been fully implemented at 33 transit agencies across the state. FRITS provides real-time service information for passengers, and enhanced transit planning for agencies. Passengers are now able to see their bus and how far away it is from their location at nearly three dozen transit agencies spanning 41 counties across the Commonwealth.

Riders can access real-time service information including the location of the bus and predicted stop arrival times via the “myStop” smartphone app. Customers can also easily navigate between transit agencies using myStop, which is especially useful for riders in rural areas.

Additionally, because all agencies have had their routes certified by Google Maps as part of the project, customers can use Google Maps to plan transit routes as well and rest assured that route information is accurate. To see available services, visit https://www.pa.gov/penndot in the “Public Transit Options” section of “Traveling in PA.”
