Freeman’s lease to purchase bill would expand affordable home ownership

$500,000 grant for Gateway Center Hotel Project

“The Gateway project has been designed to provide a Hyatt Hotel type facility that would accommodate the needs for presentations, with sufficient rooms and projection rooms, making it better for businesses to come here. We lose out on a number of various events, different organizations, because we don't have the facility. So this facility definitely was one of my key projects," said State Rep. Schweyer Frustrated with Lack of Gun Safety Reform

Pa. state Rep. Peter Schweyer is frustrated with the way his GOP colleagues are choosing to ignore the public’s call for sensible gun safety reform. Most notably, his legislation which would have raised the legal age to purchase an assault riffle from 18 to 21 was gutted by the House Judiciary Committee. The entire language of House Bill 717 was replaced with unrelated language that would remove some existing requirements for handgun background checks. Read more

 

Schlossberg: Real Need to Invest in Mental Health

Pa. state Rep. Mike Schlossberg knows there are huge challenges for counties facing behavioral health related issues. In 2011, about $81 million was cut from county mental health service providers. This year, he says that the state is in a position to bring that funding back to those same levels. With a multi-billion dollar surplus, he is proposing to add $100 million to mental health line items to make up for this lost time and funding. Read more

 

Judiciary committee deletes age restrictions for assault weapon ownership

As bill to limit fireworks advances in Pa. Senate, some ask: Does it go far enough?

Unless police see someone light a firework’s fuse, they can’t take any action against them for detonating fireworks illegally, and aren’t allowed to confiscate any unlit fireworks, Schweyer said. The bill in the Senate would allow officers to confiscate fireworks. Read more

Pashinski: We Need More Access to Mental Health Services

As Pennsylvania experiences a growing mental health crisis, Pa. state Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski supports additional funding and resources for mental health services through the HOPE for PA plan. Pashinksi, Democratic Chair of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, also says our farmers don't have the same access to mental health services as those in cities and to help remedy that, the Pa. Department of Agriculture has provided funding for additional phone resources to connect farmers with support. The AgriStress HelpLine for Pennsylvania is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Pa. state Rep. Peter Schweyer speaks on the need for his bill to restrict ownership of AR-15-style so-called “modern sporting rifles” to adults aged 21 and over.
