Free motorcycle safety training

Now that the motorcycle riding season is in full swing, it is a great time to remind everyone that training, preparation, and safe riding can help keep motorcyclists safe on the road. If you have a motorcycle permit or license, you can earn your license or refresh your skills through a variety of free training programs, some of which are offered nearby.

Distracted driving can soon draw fines in PA

Drivers take note: Beginning June 6, you can be cited for driving while using a handheld device in Pennsylvania, even while stopped at a red light or in a traffic jam. “Paul Miller’s Law” went into effect last year, but during the first year, police could only issue warnings. June 6 marks the date when drivers convicted of distracted driving will be subject to a $50 fine. Exceptions apply for contacting emergency officials and using hands-free technology.

Signed by Gov. Shapiro in 2024, “Paul Miller’s Law” was named for a 21-year-old Scranton man who was killed in a 2010 crash involving a truck driver using a cell phone.

Apply for property tax or rent rebates

Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program helps older residents stay in their homes while affording life’s necessities, and applications are now open. The program benefits income-eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 or older, widows and widowers 50 or older, and individuals with disabilities 18 or older. Rebates range from $380 to $1,000, and the deadline to apply has been extended to Dec. 31.

Learn more about the program here. My staff are available to assist with applications, so don’t hesitate to visit my district office. The graphic above lists the information you should bring with you to apply.

Dental care and oral health services

Access to dental care and oral health services are vital and the PA Coalition for Oral Health wants to help. There is information about pop-up clinics and events on their website. Please do not hesitate to visit the website and learn more.

Attending and speaking at an annual Memorial Day event

I was truly honored to be invited not only to attend, but also to speak at the Borough of Fountain Hill’s annual Memorial Day event. Special thanks to the Fountain Hill volunteer firefighters, members of the Fountain Hill Police Department, and the public works staff who work to make this special event possible.

A special thanks to Council President Stew McCandless and the other members of the council. Fountain Hill is a truly great community, and I am always proud to represent it as their state legislator.
