Building on their bipartisan efforts to enhance urban search and rescue in western Pennsylvania in the recent state budget, Rep. Dan Miller was joined by area lawmakers, Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey ,and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, at a news conference on October 11, 2022 at the Allegheny County Fire Academy training grounds to discuss their ongoing efforts and progress to date. In addition to the announcement, an Urban Search & Rescue demonstration followed the news conference. The bipartisan group began working to establish a Type 1 Urban Search and Rescue Team in western Pennsylvania after the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse. Currently, the only Type 1 group in Pennsylvania is based in Philadelphia.
