PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 1 - Pennsylvania Speaker of the House Joanna McClinton, D-Phila./Delaware, announced today that several large-scale projects to benefit residents of west and southwest Philadelphia were selected for more than $2 million in state grants.

Funding for the projects is from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, which is a state grant program administered by the Office of the Budget for the design, acquisition, and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects.

“By partnering with the state, we can make strategic investments in our community that will grow jobs, bolster affordable housing, and improve the quality of life for everyone,” McClinton said. “The projects at Madinah Mosque, Bartram’s Garden and Walnut Park Plaza will help these organizations better serve our community and will have a significant impact on our neighbors’ lives.”

The projects in McClinton’s district include:

  •  Madinah Mosque - $1 million to construct a new mosque with dedicated spaces for spiritual activities, prayer, recreation, and learning, including a fully equipped commercial kitchen. Improvements will allow for additional youth outreach and accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
  •  John Bartram Association - $500,000 to reconstruct a portion of the existing trail to follow the river's edge and to reconfigure the main access point to Bartram's Garden and the Bartram's Mile Trail to include safe access for pedestrians and bikes.
  •  Walnut Park Plaza - $500,000 to make energy efficiency and apartment modernization upgrades.

McClinton added that two additional grants that will benefit the entire Philadelphia community were also awarded funds:

  • Share Food Program Warehouse Revitalization - $2.5 million for construction costs to ensure that Share Food Program's primary distribution hub meets high food safety and sustainability standards.
  • Steamfitters Training Center and Apprenticeship Expansion - $5 million to construct and renovate Local 420's existing facility to add classrooms and other training areas
