McClinton helps secure more than $488,000 to improve public safety, parks and green spaces

PA House Democratic Leader Joanna McClinton announced today $488,751 is being awarded to improve public safety, playgrounds and green spaces in the communities she serves.

McClinton helped secure state grants that were approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. The following projects in Philadelphia received funding through the Greenways, Trails and Recreations Fund:

  • $225,000 to install playground equipment designed for both exercising and learning along with benches and game tables outside the Blanche A. Nixon/Cobbs Creek Library. Landscaping improvements will also be completed.

  • $50,000 to aid in the planning of biking and walking trails along the Schuylkill River from 61st Street to the Passyunk Avenue Bridge, which will include a thorough topographic survey of the riverbank and extensive community outreach.

  • $25,000 to put in new playground equipment, including various ADA-size swings, at Francis J. Myers Recreation Park, as well as the construction of an ADA ramp.

“Investing in making outdoor spaces available and accessible to all of my neighbors – especially our young people – is critical for not only their physical but mental health,” said McClinton, D-Phila./Delaware. “At a time when we are still dealing with the stresses of COVID-19 and the ongoing fear of gun violence, these opportunities are a way to bring our communities together and let our kids enjoy being kids in safe environments.”

McClinton added $188,751 from the Multimodal Transportation Fund was approved to install ADA ramps and sidewalks in Yeadon Borough on West Cobbs Creek Parkway, Bailey Road in front of the Evans Elementary School, and at the intersection of Robin Road and Wycombe Avenue.

“These dollars are building on our ongoing effort to make our streets safer for our most vulnerable neighbors,” McClinton explained. “Moving forward, we must find similar ways to implement changes to ensure everyone is protected when they travel.”

The Commonwealth Financing Authority was established in 2004 as an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development and holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments made through several state grant programs.
