HARRISBURG, Dec. 16 – Longtime community activist state Rep.-elect Regina Young, D-Phila./Delaware, today announced that she will introduce a total of nine bills, jumpstarting her legislative agenda weeks prior to being in sworn in. Of the nine bills, the incoming freshman legislator said the four she is currently drafting draw from her previous roles as an educator and social worker; the bills address equitable education funding, career readiness for students, improved support for immigrant services and criminal justice reform for juveniles. The proposed bills aim to: Improve public education by making funding and education quality in traditional public schools equal to that of charter, parochial and private schools, regardless of the learning environment and setting. Strengthen workforce development through the creation of a stronger pipeline between high schools and the trades by offering training opportunities and expanded support for high school graduates to sharpen their math and reading skills to help them better qualify for a broader range of trades and careers. Expand services for immigrants by offering better support for school-age refugees. High school seniors interested in receiving financial assistance to help pay for college can now apply for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives’ Scholarship. Each year the program awards a four-year scholarship to two students preparing for post-secondary education. The scholarship is privately funded by individual and corporate donors; no tax or other public funds are used. The program is open to graduating high school seniors who are Pennsylvania residents with plans to attend a Pennsylvania college, university, or career school as a full-time student. Students must have attained a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average in high school in order to be eligible for a scholarship. Other factors taken into consideration for the awards are a student’s commitment to community, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities, and financial need. The scholarship program is administered through the Foundation for Enhancing Communities. This January and February, the Prevention Education Program is offering 7 completely free educational speaking events on many important alcohol, tobacco, and other drug topics. These are important resources to for parents, caregivers, professionals working with youth, and other caring adults. HARRISBURG, Dec. 29 – State representatives and senators from Delaware County applauded a $1.5 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program award to strengthen the county’s 911 system. Through bipartisan efforts, elected officials helped secure grants to benefit more than 560,000 Pennsylvanians and help Delaware County’s first responders. This project will strengthen the security and reliability of the county’s public safety communication system. This includes 24 tower upgrades to provide acceptable county-wide communication coverage, shelter structures, an ice bridge, grounding, electric, HVAC, core work additions and 911 center equipment to communicate effectively in emergency situations with citizens, first responders and with surrounding counties in southeastern Pennsylvania. “Calling 911 and receiving a timely response has been an issue for years throughout Delaware County,” House Democratic Leader Joanna McClinton, D-Delaware/Phila., said. “Thankfully, this funding will help streamline our communications system to ensure that residents in crisis can quickly receive help and support. STATE GRANT PROGRAMS NOW OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS: Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs: Veterans’ Trust Fund Grant Program (Source of Funding: Veterans’ Trust Fund) Who May Apply : 501(c)(3) nonprofits with a mission of serving veterans, 501(c)(19) veteran service organizations, and county directors of veterans affairs. Use : Up to $150,000 in grant funding is available for new, innovative or expanded programs or services operated by the county directors of veterans’ affairs or the Pennsylvania Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs. The areas of emphasis for applicants in this category are veterans’ outreach and veterans’ court programs. Up to $650,000 in grant funding is available to veteran service organizations and non-profit organizations with a mission of serving Pennsylvania veterans.
