DeLissio votes for bill to help child sex abuse victims pursue justice

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 4 – State Rep. Pamela A. DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., said that a statutes of limitation reform bill that passed the House and is back in the Senate is a long-overdue step toward helping victims of childhood sexual abuse pursue justice. The House voted 173-21 last week to pass S.B. 261, a bill that would remove the criminal statute of limitations for child sexual abuse and extend the statute of limitations to age to 50 for civil suits for child sexual abuse. DeLissio voted in favor of the bill. As amended in the House, the bill includes a two-year retroactive window for now-adult victims of childhood sexual abuse who have aged out of their statute of limitations, allowing them to bring civil claims in court. “It is well documented that it can take decades for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to process the trauma. Giving them the ability to pursue justice through the court system when they are ready is the right thing to do,” DeLissio said. “The most recent grand jury report revealed widespread efforts to conceal abuse in the Catholic Church – and we know that this issue is not limited to the church. “This legislation is a long-overdue step to better protect children, help survivors heal and make sure perpetrators are held accountable, including those who would endeavor to cover these crimes up.” Read more

 

DeLissio to offer free paper shredding events Oct. 13 and 27--RAIN OR SHINE

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 4 – State Rep. Pamela A. DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., will hold two free shredding events for constituents to safely dispose of confidential, unwanted documents. The first shred event will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 13 in the Magisterial District Court parking lot at 925 Montgomery Ave., Narberth. The second shred event will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 27 at the Roxborough Municipal Lot at 514 Dupont St. Philadelphia. Availability is on a first-come basis until the truck is full. The event will be held rain or shine. There is a limit of four bags per household (standard storage/banker boxes or grocery bags). "Safe disposal of documents with personal information is one of the best defenses against identity theft,” DeLissio said. "Shredding also is a great way to dispose of unneeded paper in an environmentally friendly way, and I am happy to offer this service to my constituents." DeLissio said common types of unwanted items that should be shredded include credit card statements, credit card applications, bank and investment statements, canceled checks, income tax information, insurance and health records and retirement or pension fund information. DeLissio to host annual Senior Expo on Sept. 27

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 6 – State Rep. Pamela A. DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., will host a free Senior Expo from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 27 during the Roxborough Hospital Good Neighbor Day being held at 5800 Ridge Ave. The expo will be under the tent in the lot off of Rector Street. This is a rain or shine event. DeLissio said she will continue to offer a diverse group of exhibitors at the expo to acknowledge seniors’ varied interests and needs. “Seniors are active and vital members of the community, and I’m excited to be able to bring together a diverse group of agencies and organizations that offer opportunities specifically for older adults,” DeLissio said. “Folks will be introduced to organizations providing lifelong learning and volunteer opportunities, and ways to stay or become engaged with the community in which we live, work and play.” Representatives from the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, Visiting Nurses Association, SeniorLAW Center, AARP, and many other organizations will be available to provide information that older adults may find helpful. DeLissio announces $750,000 grant for NewCourtland LIFE

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 6 – NewCourtland LIFE received a $750,000 Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant to help build the LIFE center for seniors, Rep. Pamela A. DeLissio announced today. NewCourtland LIFE is building a new LIFE center in addition to 36 units of supportive senior housing at 3232 Henry Ave., according to the grant application. This project is part of a multi-phase development at this location. Total cost for this phase is $15,349,963. NewCourtland provides home and community-based services, housing and nursing care to older adults in Philadelphia. “Our commonwealth's older adult citizens, particularly those with extremely limited income, deserve the same continuum of choices as those older adult citizens who are financially secure,” said DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila. “NewCourtland has as its mission to provide housing and skilled services to lower-income older adults. “This grant will be used to fund a brick and mortar project that benefits citizens in their own community. DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., today hosted a House Democratic Policy Committee public roundtable in the conservatory at the West Laurel Hill Cemetery to discuss the merits of universal health coverage and single-payer health care. DeLissio was joined by Policy Committee Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, and state legislators from across the commonwealth. They discussed concepts behind her legislation, H.B.1688 , which would establish the Pennsylvania Health Care Plan. Questions over judgement in Mancusco case could lead to reform

As a community of neighbors, friends and loved ones, many of us in the Manayunk area were terribly saddened and shaken over last week’s murder/suicide involving a 7-year-old girl and her father. Many are now asking how this tragedy could have been avoided. As a state representative, I am directly asked and wrestle with the question myself: how could the system have helped Kayden Mancusco and her family? How can we avoid something like this from happening again? An answer I’ve mulled the past few days involves other questions: do constituents understand how judges come to sit on their benches in Pennsylvania? I wonder because, especially in this case, it’s been widely panned that a judge could have done more to protect Kayden. What level of diligence do voters exercise when deciding who is best qualified to be a judge and make life and death decisions? Do our state laws and electoral systems override merit and influence how a citizen votes? Do politics preclude more qualified candidates from the ballot, leaving voters with limited partisan options? You could even ask, based on the very way judges make it to a bench in Pennsylvania, did we all contribute to Kayden’s brutal and untimely passing if we either did not vote or voted in such a way to elect an unqualified person to the bench? PHILADELPHIA, July 27 – State Rep. Pamela A. DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., applauded the progress of medical marijuana in Pennsylvania, just over two years after S.B.3, known as Act 16 of 2016, was passed and signed into law. DeLissio recently updated constituents on the program at her 75 th Town Hall meeting with special guest Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine. The discussion focused on an update on the rollout of medical marijuana and the efforts that the commonwealth has undertaken to combat the opioid crisis. "Medical marijuana is an important treatment option for citizens, and my office is committed to helping any constituent who needs assistance navigating the medical marijuana process,” DeLissio said. DeLissio said that if someone thinks that they have a condition that qualifies them for medical marijuana, they should consult with their physician and go online to www.medicalmarijuana.pa.gov to view the list of qualifying conditions. Originally there were 17 qualifying conditions, and four have been added recently. On the website is a list of doctors who are approved to recommend medical marijuana. DeLissio said that the list is not comprehensive, as some physicians may choose not to be listed in the online registry.
