Resolution honors police officers in Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, May 7 – The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has unanimously adopted a resolution (H.R. 828) introduced by Rep. Frank Burns designating May 15 as Police Officers Memorial Day in Pennsylvania and May 11 through 17 as National Police Week in the state.

"Our police officers serve and protect us with courage and dedication, and Police Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week serve to remind us all of their efforts," Burns said.

Police Officers Memorial Day, a day observed in memory of those police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, was first designated by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Since then, tens of thousands of law enforcement from around the world have participated in numerous events to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

On Monday, lawmakers joined law enforcement personnel from across the state to honor those officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2013. To see a clip of the ceremony, visit http://youtu.be/lrPeH-GNY04.
