Burgos lauds new law to make professional licensing

(Jul 01, 2019)

HARRISBURG, July 1 – State Rep. Danilo Burgos, D-Phila., hailed the enactment of legislation (H.B.1172) that will make it easier for people who need professional licenses to work in the state. Gov. Tom Wolf today signed the bill co-sponsored by Burgos which establishes an endorsement process for all boards and commissions under the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs to issue licenses to applicants who are licensed to practice in another state. Under the law, Pennsylvania boards and commissions will be able to issue a provisional endorsement license to allow the applicant, who must be in good standing, to practice while completing the remaining requirements for licensure. “This new law benefits people in my legislative district and the entire city of Philadelphia, where we have many burgeoning industries that attract licensed professionals from across the country,” Burgos said. “Waiting for approval for transferring certain licenses is a risk that can result in loss of income; it’s a risk that many aren’t willing to take, which in turn results in missing out on diverse talent for our local growing industries. “With this law, these professionals can relocate to our city and state, and seamlessly enter the workforce on a provisional license while the permeant license is being processed.” Burgos said the provisional endorsement license would expire if the applicant is denied a Read more

Wolf signs Farm Bill package with Burgos legislation to improve childhood nutrition initiatives

(Jul 01, 2019)

HARRISBURG, July 1 – State Rep. Danilo Burgos, D-Phila., today announced Gov. Tom Wolf signed the PA Farm Bill package into law, including his legislation that will increase childhood education and exposure to nutritious foods and Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry. Burgos said the legislation will expand grants to support children in pre-k through fifth grade. The previous program only provided money to children in kindergarten. These grants will aid in increasing nutrition and agriculture education, including the integration of both topics into regular school subjects. “These grants will be awarded to areas where there is a high percentage of children who receive free or reduced-price meals at schools. Many of the young people in Philadelphia fall under that guideline and have limited to no exposure to healthy or nutritious foods. That is a big problem,” Burgos said. “By exposing children to foods that are beneficial to good health, it hopefully will provide a foundation for them to make nutritious choices for the rest of their lives. “I would like to thank Representative Johnathan Hershey for his bipartisan work on this legislation and to Governor Wolf for signing it into law.” Burgos added these grants will support training for teachers and other educational staff on nutrition and agriculture education; field trips to Pennsylvania farms and other agricultural educational experiences; and will allow inclusion of parents, Read more

Burgos to take on leadership role in agriculture policy

(Mar 29, 2019)

HARRISBURG, March 29 – State Rep. Danilo Burgos, D-Phila., today said he was appointed to serve in a leadership role with the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, a committee not normally linked with city lawmakers. Burgos, who is a member of the committee and will now serve as Democratic secretary, said the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee reviews bills that directly affect Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry, including food safety and processing, transportation, marketing, weights and measures and farm equipment and production. It also works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture on boards and commissions related to agriculture. “I am both humbled and honored to take a leadership role on the House Agriculture Committee, and I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to continue to tackle the agriculture concerns of our state, including food safety, food security and supporting the number one industry of our state,” Burgos said. “As a city lawmaker, not normally associated with dairy farms, corn fields and mushroom farms, I am excited to bring a different perspective to this committee.” Burgos said adding city legislators to the leadership fold will continue to help shape the committee in the image of the state. “City legislators within this committee means that we have the opportunity to continue to tackle the state’s agriculture issues, but with more of a balance,” Burgos Read more

PLBC condemns divisive invocation given in the House Chamber

(Mar 26, 2019)

Members from Philadelphia and of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus today condemned a divisive opening prayer delivered Monday in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Here’s a selection of quotes. Rep. Stephen Kinsey, PLBC chairman: “On a day that should have been celebrated, we found ourselves confused and mortified. The swearing-in of Representative Movita Johnson-Harrell as the first Muslim woman to ever serve in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives was overshadowed by the outrageous remarks made by the Republican member. This is disgusting behavior. I choose to celebrate the diversity of our caucus, and welcome Representative Johnson-Harrell with open, loving arms. I believe our Democratic Leader Frank Dermody said it best, ‘It was beneath the dignity of the House.’ There is no room for hate.” Rep. Donna Bullock, PLBC vice chairwoman: “It is unfortunate that prayer was used to intimidate and divide. As our state legislature becomes more diverse, as we elect more women, more people of color, and people of different faiths and experiences, our ability to work together for all Pennsylvanians will be tested. I pray that my colleagues come to understand that Pennsylvania's diversity is our strength, not the enemy.” Rep. Summer Lee, PLBC treasurer who represents a portion of Allegheny County: ”We want to foremost, recognize and celebrate the historic victory and swearing-in of Read more

Burgos appointed to serve on Governor’s Census Commission

(Mar 15, 2019)

HARRISBURG, March 15 -- State Rep. Danilo Burgos, D-Phila., was appointed to serve on the Governor’s Census 2020 Complete Count Commission as Pennsylvania prepares for the 2020 census. Gov. Tom Wolf formed the commission to make sure Pennsylvania is taking the appropriate steps to achieve a complete and accurate count of the population. Burgos said that the commission will be making recommendations on methods and policies that will help make the 2020 census more accurate and easier to achieve. “I am looking forward to working with, and facilitating the most complete and accurate census count in 2020. Including implementing strategies to reach hard-to-count populations and hard-to-enumerate areas,” Burgos said. “This is an important appointment as the commonwealth prepares for the census next year. We need all people to be counted, from our biggest cities to our small and rural communities Pennsylvania may suffer deep consequences if the population is miscounted. “From losing seats in Congress to receiving billions of dollars less in federal funds for a variety of services and programs, there is a lot at stake. It is why the work of this commission is so important, and why it is an honor for me to be chosen for this important work,” he said. Some of the organizations joining Burgos on the commission are the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, Service Employees International Union and the NAACP. Kenyatta, Burgos discuss eliminating toxic poverty at Policy Committee hearing

(Mar 05, 2019)

PHILADELPHIA, March 5 – State Reps. Malcolm Kenyatta and Danilo Burgos, both D-Phila., hosted a House Democratic Policy Committee public hearing to discuss the health impacts of deep poverty and how to reverse the trend. The freshmen legislators brought together legislators from across the state, including Policy Committee Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, and local officials and advocates to discuss how they can work together to create better opportunities to break the cycle of toxic poverty. “Poverty is a public health crisis and we must address it as such. Toxic poverty systemically diminishes educational opportunities for our kids and in communities hardest hit,” Kenyatta said. “Securing a family sustained job that can build generational wealth and lift folks out of this cycle is too often out of reach. Today’s discussion further emphasized that eradicating poverty is the moral and economic issue of our time and brought light to how we can work together to invest our resources in educating our communities, children and adults, and reduce the need for correctional and unnecessary medical costs.” “The poverty cycle is hard on families. It’s a depressing cycle that is difficult to overcome,” Burgos said. “If we can work together as a community to empower people, address the mental and physical toll poverty takes on individuals and help lift them up, we can make real change that improves life for Read more
