Gergely: over $3.7 million in community grants awarded

McKEESPORT, Oct. 24 – State Rep. Matthew R. Gergely, D-Allegheny, announced that a total of $3,719,752 in state grants was awarded to several local institutions.

Gergely and state Sen. Jim Brewster, D-Allegheny, helped facilitate the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program’s allocation sum of $750,000 to three projects:

  • South Allegheny School District -- $250,000 for roof replacement work at South Allegheny Elementary School.
  • Steel Valley School District -- $250,000 for roof replacement and HVAC work at Barrett Elementary School.
  • Steel Valley School District -- $250,000 for HVAC, plumbing, and health and safety upgrades at Steel Valley Middle/High School.

In addition, $2,969,752 in Local Share Account funds was awarded to the following 14 projects:

  • McKeesport -- $750,000 to improve the Lysle Boulevard Parking Garage.
  • Clairton Municipal Authority -- $434,000 to construct a septage receiving station.
  • Port Vue Borough -- $275,000 to purchase emergency response equipment for Vigilant Hose Company No. 1.
  • Clairton -- $250,000 to install new windows and doors in its City Hall Building.
  • Duquesne -- $250,000 to inventory water lines.
  • Liberty Borough -- $144,257 to purchase a new backhoe for the public works department.
  • Duquesne -- $144,094 to purchase a utility tractor.
  • Steel Rivers Council Of Governments -- $142,350 to upgrade a walking trail in Heritage Hill Park.
  • Homestead Borough -- $136,263 to purchase an electric sidewalk sweeper.
  • Allegheny County Redevelopment Authority -- $100,000 to renovate the music hall at Carnegie Library of Homestead.
  • Versailles Borough -- $100,000 to rehabilitate Worthington Street.
  • Whitaker Borough -- $100,000 to purchase a new public works vehicle, snowplow and salt spreader.
  • Homestead Borough -- $89,658 to purchase a trailer-mounted asphalt spray patcher.
  • West Homestead Borough -- $54,130 to purchase an emergency management vehicle.

PSFIG provides grants to public school districts and area career and technical schools for eligible facility improvement projects. The LSA supports projects in the public interest within Pennsylvania and is made possible by gaming revenues through the Commonwealth Financing Authority.
