Madsen welcomes $4 million in state grants for community projects in Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Nov. 1 – State Rep. Dave Madsen announced that $4 million in state funding has been awarded to two projects that will enhance the Harrisburg community: the YWCA Greater Harrisburg Renovation Project and the Harrisburg J.E.D.I.I. Center at The Bridge HBG.

“These projects represent Harrisburg’s commitment to creating a community that uplifts everyone’s potential,” said Madsen, D-Dauphin. “By preserving the YWCA’s legacy of service and building the J.E.D.I.I. Center’s vision for a brighter future, we’re strengthening the foundations of our city. These funds are an investment in Harrisburg’s shared success.”

A $1 million grant will fund renovations at the YWCA Greater Harrisburg. After a 2022 comprehensive assessment identified over $3 million in urgent facility upgrades, this funding will provide improvements to ensure the YWCA remains a safe and accessible space for those it serves. The renovations will address key structural and functional needs, allowing the YWCA to better support individuals and families through its programming.

A $3 million grant has been awarded to restore and revitalize the former Bishop McDevitt High School building, which will house the new Harrisburg J.E.D.I.I. (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Innovation) Center. This funding will facilitate restoration work and weatherproofing of the 101,300-square-foot facility, which includes demolishing compromised sections of the building. Once complete, the J.E.D.I.I. Center will serve as a transformative hub and provide opportunities and resources to residents of Harrisburg.

Both grants are awarded through Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, supporting projects that foster economic and community development, job creation and quality-of-life improvements across the Commonwealth.
