Sanchez to introduce resolution condemning recent attacks in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh)

HARRISBURG, Oct. 16 – State Rep. Ben Sanchez, D-Montgomery, will soon introduce a resolution condemning recent attacks and denouncing Turkey’s involvement in what he calls a “humanitarian crisis unfolding in the South Caucasus.”
The prevention of a second Armenian Genocide is the goal of Sanchez’s upcoming House resolution, which seeks to raise awareness to help protect lives after decades of fragile peace were disrupted in the Republic of Artsakh just weeks ago.
Sanchez noted that forces from Azerbaijan, which borders Artsakh to the east and north, launched an unprovoked, large-scale attack on the country also known as Nagorno-Karabakh with the aid and support of Turkey. This happened on the morning of Sept. 27, 2020.
The Azeris have since used Turkish military equipment and cluster bombs in civilian areas, directly violating international humanitarian laws, he said, adding that Turkey has also sent thousands of jihadist mercenaries from Syria and Libya to fight in Azerbaijan.
“Despite international pressure for a cessation of hostilities, the situation is deteriorating,” Sanchez said. “Artsakh is being attacked mercilessly. Because of this appalling action, I am introducing this resolution to condemn the attacks and Turkey’s involvement.”
Sanchez, whose resolution has bipartisan support, cited similar resolutions recently passed in other states, including Michigan, as precedent to add Pennsylvania to the growing list of voices speaking out against this humanitarian crisis.
The Armenian Genocide from 1915-1923 was the systematic murder and deportation of 1.5 million Armenians by the Turks of the Ottoman Empire.
