HARRISBURG, Oct. 27 – During a news conference today held in Pittsburgh, state Reps. Emily Kinkead, D-Allegheny, and Valerie Gaydos, R-Allegheny, introduced legislation to create a new insurance program for homeowners living in landslide-prone areas, as well as assistance to local governments that wish to mitigate the risk of landslides within their communities. The bill would add coverage of landslides, slope movement and sinkholes to an existing program in the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection that currently covers only mine subsidence assistance and insurance. “Landslides represent a significant financial burden to our Commonwealth residents, costing them millions in damages every year,” said Gaydos. “Unfortunately, this type of disaster typically is not covered by most insurance policies.” Kinkead represents a high concentration of landslide victims in the North Hills and on the North Side of Pittsburgh. “Previous versions of this legislation, including a bill I introduced last year , have been discussed but have languished in committee,” said Kinkead. “Representative Gaydos and I have worked together to update and streamline the proposed program and are introducing a new, bipartisan bill. PITTSBURGH, Oct. 27 – Grants totaling more than $2.2 million have been secured to support three redevelopment projects in the city, state Rep. Emily Kinkead, D-Allegheny, announced today. “Two of these projects will expand opportunities for local seniors and people with disabilities,” said Kinkead. “I’m very grateful to have played a role in securing funds for all three of these projects, especially those that will directly benefit the more vulnerable members of our community.” Kinkead said the awarded projects include: $500,000 to Verland CLA to support a Signature Home for individuals with disabilities in the North Side Area of Pittsburgh. The Signature Homes will accommodate residents by providing a living environment built with no steps to climb for ingress, egress, or throughout the living space, and an oversized garage that will accommodate a handicapped accessible van. The homes are fully sprinkled, allowing for safer and longer evacuation times in case of fire. $730,000 to the city to support construction efforts at the Brighton Heights Healthy Active Living Center. PITTSBURGH, Oct. 19 – More than $83 million has been allocated for major renovations to water lines within the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority, state Rep. Emily Kinkead, D-Allegheny, announced today. “It’s no secret that water lines in Pittsburgh have been neglected for decades,” said Kinkead. “I’m very excited to see an investment like this to directly improve the drinking water quality for many city residents and get us much closer to a lead-free system.” Among other projects announced across the state today, the PENNVEST board approved funds totaling nearly $83.4 million for the PWSA as follows: A $6.48 million grant and a $1.35 million loan to replace lead service lines that will affect 752 residential customers in areas where leaking, undersized water mains will also be replaced. A $75.5 million loan to replace approximately 63,000 feet of water lines throughout the distribution system. The project will address multiple undersized and leaking lines in a system with a historical water loss of 43%. The funding was approved today by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority, or PENNVEST, which provides low-interest loans and grants to Pennsylvania municipalities or authorities to help fund water and sewer projects. Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency: Regional Policing Assistance Program Who May Apply: Applicants for the Regional Policing Assistance Program may be any municipality – a city, borough, township, home-rule municipality, or county. Applicants may also be a public or quasi-public body, or its representative, duly authorized to act on behalf of one or more municipalities. All applications must be accompanied by fully executed Articles of Agreement or an Intergovernmental Agreement that establishes a Regional Police Department. Use: Funding will support efforts in establishing or expanding regional police departments that would improve the following: uniformity and consistency of enforcement across municipalities; recruitment; distribution and deployment of police personnel; training and personnel efficiency; career enhancement opportunities; enhanced professionalism; and reduction of costs. HARRISBURG, Sept. 21 – Today, Senator Lindsey M. Williams joined Representative Emily Kinkead, school administrators, advocates, and parents to discuss the importance of ensuring that all Pennsylvania students have reliable access to nutritious school meals every day. Following urging from advocates, Senator Williams, and other Democratic members of the Senate Education Committee, the Wolf Administration announced the Universal Free Breakfast Program earlier this month. This program will provide free breakfast for all Pennsylvania students enrolled in schools that participate in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, beginning October 1. However, this program only covers breakfast and will expire after the 2022-23 school year. As a Senator Williams and Representative Kinkead have introduced the “No Student Should Go Hungry Universal School Meals” legislation in the Senate and House . ROSS TOWNSHIP, Sept. 8 – Today, state Rep. Emily Kinkead and state Sen. Lindsey Williams, both D-Allegheny, joined members of the Ross Township Police Department, local officials, and family members of the late Chief Vernon Moses for the dedication of the Chief Vernon Moses Memorial Highway. The portion of U.S. Route 19 between Ivory Avenue and Cemetery Lane in Ross Township is now officially recognized as the Chief Vernon Moses Memorial Highway, with a newly erected PennDOT sign displaying the title. Moses, the only officer killed in the line of duty in the department’s 100-year history, was tragically gunned down along this section of the road on May 3, 1932. “I never met [my grandfather], my mother was in labor with me when he was killed,” said Ronald Rickley, Moses’ grandson. “The family is very moved by this honor. HARRISBURG, Aug. 29 – State Rep. Emily Kinkead, D-Allegheny, announced today that she is now a board member of the Pennsylvania Prison Society , the nation’s oldest organization dedicated to the pursuit of humane criminal justice. “Incarcerated people have their basic human rights violated on a regular basis in Pennsylvania prisons and correctional facilities throughout America,” Kinkead said. “Our current prison system is inhumane and does not advance the goals of deterring crime or reducing recidivism. It is obvious that major reforms need to happen, and I’m eager to join the PA Prison Society on their mission to create a more rational approach to criminal justice in our state.” An experienced attorney, Kinkead has been a strong voice for criminal justice overhaul since her election to the PA House in 2020. In January, Kinkead co-sponsored and became a fierce advocate for a package of prison reform bills led by state Rep. Stephen Kinsey, D-Philadelphia. HARRISBURG, June 14 – As states begin to impose abortion restrictions in the wake of Roe v. Wade being overturned, Reps.
