The House Democratic Policy Committee convened a hearing in Mercer County, hosted by House Democratic Education Committee Chairman Mark Longietti, to discuss education funding policies in Pennsylvania, specifically the promise of Level Up funding, the need for charter school funding reform, and the threat of school vouchers.

October 11, 2022 - Reforming Charter Schools

The House Democratic Policy Committee convened a hearing to discuss the need to reform Pennsylvania’s charter school law and address teacher shortages across the state. The hearing, hosted by Rep. Frank Burns, featured testimony from several local school district officials and local school board members, as well as a charter school advocacy organization.

At a joint hearing before the House Democratic Policy Committee and the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, testifiers pointed to specific ways state government can refocus its efforts on environmental justice and racial equity in order to help communities. Testifiers and legislators said these efforts must include a focus on working class neighborhoods, which many times are plagued by environmental concerns, decreasing property values, a lack of fair representation in the decision-making process and other issues.

August 11, 2022 - A Post-Roe PA: Hearing at Chatham University

In a joint hearing before the PA House and Senate Policy Committees, lawmakers heard testimony from health care professionals, reproductive rights activists and legal experts on the changing landscape in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in June. The hearing was held at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, and it is is the latest in a series of joint hearings on the issues and difficulties residents are facing in a Post-Roe PA.

Following the hearing, lawmakers walked to Delaware County Memorial Hospital to join nurses and technicians demonstrating outside the hospital. The event was called an “Informational Picket” and is the second event held by Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses & Allied Professionals regarding Crozer’s planned closures.
