Merski measure to analyze AI heads to House

Committee approves resolution to study cause and effect of artificial intelligence

HARRISBURG, Dec. 13 – Lawmakers would get a detailed report on the functionality of artificial intelligence and its potential impact on our day-to-day life under a resolution the PA House State Government Committee advanced on Tuesday, according to the resolution’s sponsor, state Rep. Bob Merski.

Merski, D-Erie, said H.R. 170 would direct the Joint State Government Commission to establish an advisory committee with the objective of exploring the ramifications of AI and delivering a comprehensive report detailing the committee’s findings and recommendations.

“Anything with as much power and potential as artificial intelligence needs to be thoroughly examined and understood in order to avoid dangerous pitfalls,” Merski said. “With the rapid advancement and capability of AI, it’s important for us to thoroughly understand AI and establish safeguards for the people of Pennsylvania. Without safeguards, this bleeding edge technology could have unintended consequences that cannot be undone.”

Merski has previously advocated for steering AI away from nefarious actors and directing it toward being a beneficial, useful source for good in our society.

His resolution now heads to the full House for consideration.
