Harkins, Merski: $50,000 awarded to Urban Erie Community Development Corp.

ERIE, Dec. 4 – A grant award totaling $50,000 has been awarded to the Urban Erie Community Development Corp. to fund projects designed to address environmental disparities and promote sustainable development in underserved communities, announced state Reps. Pat Harkins and Bob Merski, both D-Erie.

"This funding is a crucial step toward ensuring that everyone, regardless of their zip code, has access to clean air, water, and a healthy environment," Harkins said. “We are committed to addressing the environmental injustices that have disproportionately affected our most vulnerable communities."

Merski said: "Environmental justice is not just an environmental issue; it's a matter of public health and social equity. This grant will empower our communities to take control of their environmental future and create a more sustainable future for all."

The grants are funded through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Justice Government-To-Government initiative and administered through the novel Pennsylvania Engaging New Voices on Environmental Justice program.
