HARRISBURG, March 14 – State House Speaker Joanna McClinton, D-Phila./Delaware, and state Rep. Rick Krajewski, D-Phila., are praising a $1.5 million investment that will improve safety along West and Southwest Philadelphia’s trolley route.
“Every day people are moving through our community on foot or bike, or by car, bus, train or trolley,” McClinton said. “And no matter what method of transportation they choose, the roadways should be safe for everyone. This funding is a worthwhile investment to improve the safety at some of the busiest trolley stops in our community.”
Krajewski added, “We’re lucky to have so many trolley lines cutting through West and Southwest Philly but need to more to keep them safe, quick and affordable. Improving transit intersections along Lancaster, Woodland and Baltimore avenues is a great step in the right direction.”
The funding, which PennDOT awarded through its Automated Red Light Enforcement Transportation Enhancements Grant Program, will be used to improve safety for transit users at intersections along SEPTA’s Trolley Modernization corridors. The goal of the project is to improve sight distance, reduce pedestrian crossing time, and allocate additional right-of-way time for transit.
The lawmakers added that the project will be concentrated on intersections with a high number of traffic incidents along Lancaster Avenue from 40th Street to 52nd Street, Woodland Avenue from 50th Street to Cemetery Avenue, and Baltimore Avenue from 54th Street to 61st Street.
