HARRISBURG, July 10 – State Reps. Dave Madsen, Patty Kim and Justin Fleming, all D-Dauphin, issued the following statements on the fire that broke out at the Broad Street Market at 1 a.m. today, causing severe damage to the interior, roof and vendor stands inside.
“The Broad Street Market has been a centerpiece of the city since its construction in 1878 and holds significant historic and community value. I’m incredibly saddened to see the place where I buy my produce and take my family on the weekends in such distressing conditions,” Madsen said. “As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I am working with committee Chairman Jordan Harris to see what state resources we can tap to aid in the restoration of our historic market. Ensuring that we get the Broad Street buildings restored to their original luster and safe for use is at the top of my priorities. I am also exploring ways to help the businesses that operate inside the market get up and running again. Harrisburg Fire Co. was promptly on the scene to extinguish the fire and to ensure no one was in danger. Thanks to their rapid response, the fire was contained to the brick building and the 1863 stone building remains undamaged. Their hard work this morning, and every day, is greatly appreciated.”
“The news of the fire at the Broad Street Market has sent waves of shock and sadness through Harrisburg,” Fleming said. “As a city resident for nearly 10 years I know we didn’t just lose a market, but a pillar of community life here. I am touched to see so many in our community reaching out with the desire to help the affected vendors during this difficult time. This is what community is all about, and it is a sign to me that Broad Street Market will rise again. We, your representatives, are firm in our resolve to help rebuild the damaged brick building quickly so that the vendors and their patrons can soon return to the restored Broad Street Market.”
“The Broad Street Market brought us together,” Kim said. “We made memories in this historic building and got to know vendors who became friends. I know many are devastated right now, but I’m fully committed to helping to rebuild and restore the brick building.”
