Hill-Evans announces over $553K in safety grants for York school districts

HARRISBURG, Feb. 27 – State Rep. Carol Hill-Evans, D-York, today announced three School Safety and Security grants totaling $553,479 for York City School District, West York Area School District, and York Suburban School District.

The School Safety and Security Committee established within the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency approved $60 million in safety grants in the commonwealth.

“With such a big investment in our local schools and our children’s safety, parents can rest easier at night and worry less during the day,” Hill-Evans said. “When it comes to our kids, they need us to step up and make sure that they are protected. We cannot allow them to live in fear daily. These measures and security plans will be crucial to ensuring they can learn in a nurturing environment without fear, while giving our educators the tools they need to bring positive support and encouragement.”

York City School District will receive $473,479 for school-wide positive behavior support that includes several support systems and interventions in school entities, and classroom management. Additionally, the funds will be used for trauma-informed approaches to education with training for faculty and staff to facilitate these new approaches.

West York Area School District will receive $40,000 for safety and security assessments and thorough districtwide school safety. This may include metal detectors and protective lighting, violence prevention and emergency preparedness education.

York Suburban School District will receive $40,000 for security planning and the purchase of related equipment. The purchase of equipment will be based on the individual needs of the school and identified by the board of school directors.

The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency receives hundreds of applications for the School Safety and Security grant program. The School Safety and Security Committee approved 524 grants on Feb. 26.
