Merski, Harkins: $325,000 secured for recreation projects

Funding to upgrade local parks, trails, stormwater management

HARRISBURG, Nov. 12 – State Reps. Pat Harkins and Bob Merski, both D-Erie, today announced $325,000 in Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Community Conservation Partnerships Program grants for projects throughout Erie County that will enhance and conserve recreational spaces.

“This investment will enhance our community's recreational spaces, promote outdoor activities, and improve the quality of life for all residents,” Merski said. “Properly funding our local parks and trails is not just an investment in our natural environment, but in our community's well-being and future.”

Harkins said, “These green spaces offer vital opportunities for recreation, health and social connection, fostering a sense of pride and unity among residents. By ensuring adequate funding, we can maintain and enhance these treasured spaces for generations to come, supporting both the physical and mental health of our community."

The funding includes:

  • $200,000 to Summit Township for the rehabilitation of Picnicana Park.
  • $65,000 to the City of Erie for the development of the Erie County Conservation District Park.
  • $60,000 to Wesleyville Borough for the rehabilitation of Morrison Park.

The Community Conservation Partnerships Program, also known as C2P2, assists local governments and organizations with funding for projects related to parks, recreation and conservation. C2P2 programs are linked with other DCNR efforts to conserve historic resources, protect water quality, enhance tourism, improve physical and mental health, and foster community development.
