Hanbidge to introduce bill requiring insurers to cover EpiPen injections for children

(Sep 04, 2019)

HARRISBURG, Sept. 4 – State Rep. Liz Hanbidge, D-Montgomery, has announced her partnership with Rep. Kristine Howard, D-Chester, to introduce legislation that would require insurance companies in Pennsylvania to cover EpiPen injections for children with allergies. Hanbidge’s announcement comes shortly after Illinois became the first state in the nation to pass and enact such bipartisan legislation. “It’s unconscionable to think that we have the means available to us to save children’s lives, but that this life-saving treatment is becoming more unaffordable and, therefore, more inaccessible to the average Pennsylvanian,” Hanbidge said. “With our legislation, insurance companies in Pennsylvania would be required to cover the cost of doctor-prescribed, medically necessary epinephrine pens for children under the age of 18. Profits cannot come before the health and well-being of our children. As an advocate for children, I’m fighting to ensure Pennsylvania becomes the second state to require coverage of this life-saving intervention for our children.” Hanbidge noted that more than 100,000 Pennsylvania children suffer from some form of food or insect allergy and more than 1,000 of those children have an allergy so severe that exposure could be fatal. Although some insurance companies do cover the costs of EpiPen injections, many low-cost, short-term insurance plans that low-income families rely on do not cover these Read more

Requiring insurance companies to cover EpiPen injections for children

(Aug 23, 2019)

As my colleagues and I begin preparing for our return to Harrisburg, I have partnered with Rep. Kristine Howard from Chester County to work towards introducing legislation that will require insurance companies to cover EpiPen injections for children with allergies. In Pennsylvania, more than 100,000 children suffer from food- or insect-related allergies, and over 1,000 of these children have an allergy so severe that any exposure could be fatal. Although some insurance companies do cover EpiPen injections, many low-cost, short-term insurance plans that low-income families rely on do not cover these live-saving prescriptions for our children. We have all read the stories over the past few years of Pennsylvania families facing the rising cost of medicines. Unfortunately, very little action has been taken at the federal level to control these rising costs, which is why our commonwealth must take matters into our own hands.Recently, following the Governor of Illinois’ approval of bipartisan legislation, Illinois became the first state to require any state-regulated health insurance company to cover the cost of doctor-prescribed medically necessary epinephrine pens for children under age 18. I will soon be introducing a similar bill with my colleague Rep. Kristine Howard to make Pennsylvania the second state in the U.S. to require coverage of this lifesaving intervention for children across our commonwealth. It is unacceptable that any child be denied access to this lifesaving... Read more

My policy hearing in our district

(Aug 16, 2019)

On Thursday, I hosted a House Policy Committee Hearing on reducing the HCBS Waiver Waitlist in Pennsylvania. According to data from the Department of Human Services, there are currently 12,965 Pennsylvanians with disabilities waiting for critical support and services provided through HCBS waivers. Home- and community-based services (HCBS) waivers, administered under our state’s Medical Assistance program, are one of the essential tools used to ensure Pennsylvanians with disabilities receive the care they require. When individuals with disabilities apply for HCBS waiver funding, they waive their right to institutional care in order to receive funding for services and supports that can be provided in their homes, alongside their families and loved ones. Hanbidge, Policy Committee look at Reducing HCBS Waiver Waitlist Times

(Aug 15, 2019)

LANSDALE, Aug. 15 – State Rep. Liz Hanbidge, D-Montgomery, held a House Democratic Policy Committee public hearing today at the Towamencin Township Building to discuss reducing the Home- and Community-Based Services Waiver Waitlist. “I’m glad we are choosing to shine a spotlight on the HCBS waiver waitlist, which is standing in the way of over 13,000 Pennsylvanians from receiving essential support services,” Hanbidge said. “By waiving their right to institutional care, individuals with disabilities on the waiver waitlist are opting to save our commonwealth billions of dollars but often receive no critical support services in return for years. This is unacceptable. After hearing from many stakeholders and activists at my Policy Committee Hearing, I am encouraged that we can make reducing the HCBS Waiver Waitlist a reality.” Hanbidge requested the hearing to discuss ways to reduce the wait times for individuals with disabilities, and the most vulnerable amongst us. She was joined by state legislators from across the state, including Policy Committee Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster. “Many of those on these waitlists are in desperate need of care and there should be no reason they have to wait for their support services that could potentially save their lives,” Sturla said. “I’m glad that Representative Hanbidge has worked with us to draw more attention to this backlog so that we might find a way to relieve it Read more

Weekly Updates: We must demand action

(Aug 12, 2019)

Dear Friends, As of today, there have been more mass shootings than days in 2019. If the pattern which has emerged thus far this year continues at the same rate, we can expect news of 40 more mass shootings before the U.S. Senate reconvenes on September 9th and 50 more mass shooting before the Pennsylvania House returns to session on September 17th. We do not have to live like this. We can and must take action. Those of us in public office have an obligation to do more to protect our children and families from gun violence. It is time to call on our elected leaders to take swift and decisive legislative action to stop this horrific violence and we must insist that our leadership do their jobs and stop risking lives in the name of politics. To confront this uniquely American problem, we must speak uncomfortable truths. Inaction is not an option. We, as a country, must come together and find sensible ways to stop these horrific acts of violence. We, as a country, must have a serious discussion about why we allow such easy access to firearms by people who should not have access to them. Until real legislative action is taken, these heartbreaking events will continue to occur. Read more

Malagari, Hanbidge bring agriculture experts and lawmakers together to raise awareness about the spotted lanternfly

(Jul 23, 2019)

SOUDERTON, July 23 -- State Reps. Steve Malagari and Liz Hanbidge, both D-Montgomery, led a public discussion Monday to raise awareness about the rising threat of the spotted lanternfly. "The invasive insect is destroying trees, crops, landscapes and properties right here in Montgomery County," Malagari explained. "The first step in protecting our communities is through education, specifically focusing on the dangers and what residents can do to help stop the spread of this pest." More than 100 people attended the event. Participants in the informational forum at Dock Mennonite Academy EC-8 Campus had the opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns, and learn about ways to detect and remove the destructive planthopper, including egg scraping and tree banding . "The agriculture industry in Montgomery County and surrounding counties plays a critical role in driving our local economy and creating and sustaining jobs," Hanbidge said. "The spotted lanternfly is putting the success of our local communities and Commonwealth at-risk. This event was an important step in sounding the alarm to prevent further damage to agriculture in our communities." The discussion was a collaborative effort that included Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding, state Sen. Maria Collett, D-Montgomery/Bucks, Democratic chairman of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, and representatives of Read more

Weekly Updates: Join me on MONDAY for a Spotted Lanternfly Forum

(Jul 19, 2019)

A friend of mine who lives in Lower Gwynedd Township recently told me that she has hundreds, if not thousands, of spotted lanternfly nymphs on trees and plants across her property. As residents across our district continue to find more spotted lanternflies, I want to be sure to provide you with an accurate and up-to-date assessment of this invasive species and how we can work to stop the spread.
