Curry celebrates passage of “Lloyd’s Law”

HARRISBURG, March 17 – State Rep. Gina H. Curry, D-Delaware, is excited to announce that legislation she introduced (House Bill 111) that would prohibit insurers from denying coverage to individuals just because they have an opioid reversal agent in their prescription profile has passed the state House of Representatives with a bipartisan vote of 153-49.

The legislation, nicknamed “Lloyd’s Law,” is named after Lloyd White, who suffered from substance use disorder before passing away in 2019. Lloyd’s mother, Sharon, had a prescription for the life-saving medication Naloxone. When Sharon later applied for life insurance for herself, she was denied coverage because she had naloxone in her prescription profile.

“Pennsylvanians should not be punished for carrying medications that saves lives,” Curry said. “Naloxone is a proven opioid reversal agent that has already saved many people from the effects of an overdose poisoning. Sadly, Sharon White is not alone in being punished for wanting to keep her loved ones alive. We’re going to change that, and I thank my colleagues in the House for delivering this long-overdue bill to end the stigma surrounding substance use disorders.”

The bill now heads to the state Senate for consideration.
