Curry to host virtual panel to discuss equity in education

HARRISBURG, Jan. 21 – State Rep. Gina H. Curry, D-Delaware, will host a virtual panel at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27 to discuss the impact that COVID-19 school closures are having on students and families.

“The decision behind closing classrooms because of COVID-19 is a tough one to make,” Curry said. “Our educators and administrators have been expected to balance keeping students healthy and to nurture the social-emotional well-being of every student, while also focusing on the adverse impact of our children academically falling behind. The inequities have been exposed, and the fact is that our families continue to be affected by the challenges with accessing resources to make at-home virtual learning a viable option. Equity in education is a top priority for me. The urgency for this conversation is imperative to continue engaging and supporting families collectively.”

Equity in Education Covid School Closures will be an informational virtual panel providing the opportunity for a community dialogue between parents, school administrators and health officials. This panel will examine the layers of inequities exacerbated by the impact of COVID-19 school closures, with the goal of understanding the day-to-day considerations identified in the school districts in the 164th.

This is a community discussion.  School administrators, health officials, parents and community members are invited to attend this virtual discussion.

The discussion will be live streamed on Curry’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/RepGinaCurry. Dr. Daniel McGarry, Upper Darby School District, Dr. Eric Becoats, William Penn School District, Dr. Monica Taylor, Chair of Delaware County Council and Pete Blank, PA Department of Health Executive Deputy Secretary, will join Curry in this important discussion.
