Conversation about Representation
|
My first meeting in a series of events to celebrate and highlight Women in Government was a great success! I was honored to welcome Judge Timika Lane, Judge Stella Tsai, and Ethel Waters, manager of constituent services for state Sen. Anthony H. Williams. I’m proud to represent a legislative district where over 53% of the people are female. Your government should reflect who you are, so in 2025, I’m celebrating and highlighting the women who represent our communities at all levels of government with a monthly series of virtual meetings and in-person events that you should plan to attend to learn more about these amazing women, their achievements, the importance of representation, and how their work impacts our families and neighborhoods.

During our Women in Government event, we talked a lot about the actions that are happening right now with the federal government in Washington, D.C. It has been very overwhelming with what seems like daily attacks on our neighbors, our freedoms and basic rights. Just remember that there are always people to help. If you are concerned about the actions being taken on immigration, I encourage you to contact these local organizations listed in this document. Additionally, while my office is here to assist you with state and local services, your concerns on these federal actions need to be heard by your federal officials. Check out the list of our congressional and senatorial officials and contact their offices for assistance or to let them know about your concerns. We’ve seen this week how advocacy and loud objections can lead to a course reversal or reevaluation by the president and his administration. Don’t give up and don’t give in. Know your rights and stay vigilant for your family and your community.

This week I was proud to announce a state grant of $150,000 was awarded to the Fairmount Park Conservancy to construct the Franklin 5K Gateway in FDR Park in South Philadelphia. This grant is going to help connect existing areas and new fields within the park. Construction of the gateway for the Franklin 5K Loop is an important part of our redevelopment within our beloved park. These gateways will complete portions of the trail that connect to the new 20th Street entryways. This is going to create more recreational opportunities not just for our community, but for the many visitors who come through FDR Park throughout the year.

This week, the House returned to session in the Capitol for the 2025-26 legislative session, and I got right to it joining my colleagues in the PA Women's Health Caucus and PA Black Maternal Health Caucus to highlight our legislative priorities. We will continue our fight for access to health care and ensuring a healthy birthing journey for our mothers and babies!
Next week, we’ll hear Gov. Josh Shapiro’s budget address which will inform our work in the coming months. As a Majority member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ll be listening closely for how the budget proposal will benefit our communities in the 185th District and what we’ll need to do to hold state agencies accountable for the good of all Pennsylvanians. I encourage you to watch the governor’s address during our joint PA House and Senate session on Tuesday, Feb. 4 beginning at 11 a.m.

My final Healthy Awareness Month session was this week, as we explored Yoga to stay active and healthy. Thank you to everyone in the community who showed up for these sessions to learn how to improve your health and your quality of life!
