Steele brings $1 million grant to Sharpsburg for Allegheny Shores project

HARRISBURG, Nov. 1 Continuing her efforts to bring state funding to a project in Sharpsburg that will redevelop an abandoned brownfield site, state Rep. Mandy Steele announced a $1 million state grant has been awarded to the Allegheny Shores redevelopment project.

Steele said this builds on the combined nearly $35.5 million in federal/state funding already allocated for the project.

“This is fantastic news from the governor and I’m pleased I was able to help secure this award,” said Steele, D-Allegheny. “The Allegheny Shores project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reconnect the Allegheny Riverfront and turn this abandoned industrial site into a productive asset for the region, with new development, new jobs and enhancing the area’s recreational opportunities.”

The grant from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program will be used to complete the site preparation needed for the first phase of the project. It includes grading and earthwork, as well as the addition of all utilities – water, sewer, electrical and telecommunications. Also planned is the construction of a new road network, cross-use parking facilities and commercial podiums, and the creation of public spaces between 19th Street and the river.

Allegheny Shores is a redevelopment project of a 52-acre brownfield site in Sharpsburg that will be turned into mixed-use commercial and residential development.

Steele said the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program is a Pennsylvania grant program for the design, acquisition, and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects. RACP projects have a regional impact and generate substantial increases or maintain current levels of employment, tax revenues or other measures of economic activity. RACP projects are state-funded projects that cannot obtain primary funding under other state programs.
