House Democrats have your back:

Fighting for consumers and regulating data centers

I was proud to support important bills that passed the House this week to push back against record utility profits and regulate data centers—real issues that Pennsylvanians really care about.

House Bill 2224, the Return on Equity Act, cleared the House on a unanimous vote and now heads to the Senate. I co-sponsored this bill to put money back in your pocket instead of delivering excessive profits for shareholders. Our current system gives more to shareholders through excessive ROE (Return on Investment), which is the biggest driver of unnecessary rate hikes. Read more about it here.

We also approved House Bill 2496, which would allow municipalities to enact a temporary pause on the submission of applications for data center developments. This bill is one of several in House Democrats’ data center oversight package—which so far has languished in the Republican-controlled Senate—and you can read more about it here.

Additionally, we passed House Bill 2198, which would end the sales tax exemption for data centers, requiring companies to pay their fair share and take the burdens off of Pennsylvania’s taxpayers.

Setting the record straight about
Educational Improvement Tax Credits

Misinformation has been circulating about a bill in Harrisburg, falsely claiming that I’m voting to cut education funding, so I want to set the record straight. The misinformation is about House Bill 2632, which would increase accountability and transparency in the state’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit programs.

This bill does not take one penny from these scholarships—anyone saying that is either misinformed or dishonestly trying to spin it. This legislation provides oversight and transparency of $680 million in money businesses are redirecting away from their tax bill to support private and parochial schools—right now we don’t know where the money goes. Since your tax dollars pay for these tax credits, we’re making sure the money is being spent to help kids.

Key support for banning harmful chemicals
from our food supply

I’m supporting legislation to ban paraquat from our food supply, and I was thrilled that the bill received support this week from The Michael J. Fox Foundation. As one of the first commercial pesticides, paraquat has caused thousands of deaths worldwide. It has been linked to Parkinson’s disease and childhood leukemia, and research shows it can be harmful both after a single exposure and after repeated, low-level exposure. Even a small amount can be fatal.

We must ban paraquat now. Huge thanks to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for backing this bill with me.

Hunting licenses are on sale now

General hunting licenses in Pennsylvania went on sale this week, while antlerless license sales also opened for residents.

Residents are guaranteed an antlerless license for any WMU if purchased before July 13, when the first round of sales opens to nonresidents. One antlerless license can be purchased per round in the first three rounds.

You can purchase licenses online at huntfish.pa.gov or in person at an issuing agent.

Next month: Free smoke alarms in

Cheswick, Springdale Township and Harmarville

Working smoke alarms can reduce the risk of death in a home fire by 50%. That’s why I’m joining the American Red Cross and Allegheny Valley V.F.C. to install free smoke alarms on Saturday, July 25, in Cheswick, Springdale Township, and Harmarville. To schedule an appointment or learn more, call 412-263-5278.

Welcoming my interns to the Capitol

It was great welcoming my interns to the Capitol this week. They are three bright and motivated young people, and it’s an honor to be part of their journey. We’re pictured here with House Speaker Joanna McClinton.
