HARRISBURG, June 3 – The House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee convened a critical public hearing on state Rep. Greg Scott’s H.B. 2238 today. This legislation was introduced in April and is designed to eliminate the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, more commonly referred to as PFAS, in household products. Scott noted that PFAS exposure has been linked to medical problems such as cancer, immune system suppression, high cholesterol, pregnancy induced hypertension, liver damage, increased risk of thyroid disease and infertility. PFAS chemicals are found in items such as firefighting foam, cookware, dental floss and feminine hygiene products, and are referred to as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the environment. The hearing today included six testifiers, ranging from people representing environmental activist groups to higher education faculty. Speakers urged the bills’ passage from both human health and environmental preservation perspectives. House Bill 2238 has 30 co-sponsors, including Reps. Mandy Steele, Tarik Khan and Ben Sanchez. “The use of PFAS chemicals in commercial products is a man-made problem. They had a choice, and they chose profit over people,” said Scott, D-Montgomery. “The prime sponsors, and our staff, have worked diligently on this legislation. We have sought, reviewed and received information from over 60 Read more

PHILADELPHIA, March 6 – The House Majority Policy Committee gathered testimony from minimum wage earners and public policy experts during a hearing Wednesday as the push to finally increase the wage in Pennsylvania continues. The hearing was hosted by Rep. Roni Green (D-Phila.) at SEIU Local 668 in Philadelphia. It comes after House Democrats passed legislation in June that would increase the state’s minimum wage to $15 by 2026. However, that bill is still awaiting action in the GOP-controlled Senate. “Raising the minimum wage in Pennsylvania is an important and timely topic. It has the potential to improve the lives of many with a fair and livable income,” Green said. “Increasing the minimum wage will reduce poverty, promote economic growth, and provide a financial sense of security for workers. It’s unacceptable that we haven’t raised the wage in 16 years.” Wednesday’s policy hearing featured testimony from Bri Golphin, an employee at the Restaurant Opportunities Center ; Karim Jones, a home healthcare worker for SEIU Healthcare PA ; and Marc Stier, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Policy Center . Jones is a full-time caregiver for his brother, who began needing assistance three years ago. Jones said the training offered by SEIU Healthcare PA has greatly impacted the quality of care he’s able to provide. But because of low wages, Jones testified that he supplements his income Read more

As a magisterial district judge, I was proud to have helped see to the creation of Montgomery County’s Pre-Trial Service program, which guarantees that everyone has an attorney at the time of their arrest, and now, as a state representative, I am happy to help make sure they can pay for it. Having an attorney represent you is a constitutional right, not just in some states but in all states, and it’s time we do our part to make that a reality.” The Read more
