I want to start this week’s e-mail by saying thank you to everyone for your kind words, prayers, flowers, and the way-too-many fruit baskets. My father in-law passed away last week after battling pancreatic cancer and my wife and I have been facing the time since his last breaths with the fondness of our memories of him and the growing mountain of grief that is filled with routine updates that we will no longer share with him. Cancer sucks!
Second, we are canceling our annual Environmental Conference previously planned for April 18. No, we are not shelving our environmental engagement for the year. Quite the opposite. With all of the deconstruction (and just pure destruction) of sustainable development commitments coming out of Washington, I believe the time to “continue our annual efforts” has passed. We need to step UP our game. Look for a more intentional and impactful agenda in the days and weeks ahead.
Finally, we’re still awaiting soil testing results from the SPS fire. I am NOT HAPPY with the delay in receiving the results that are, at this point, several weeks following the beginning of soil testing. Even as I write this, I am hopeful that initial results will be published imminently, affirming our sense of public safety.
I’m heading back to Harrisburg next week. Following the latest special elections a few weeks ago, we will be back to the full 203-member compliment for the House and will kick up the legislating a bit more aggressively (in theory).

SEPTA Work on Easton Rd. Bridge Starting Monday
|
SEPTA’s contractor will be working on both the inbound and outbound platforms at the Glenside Regional Rail Station. Crews will be demolishing the portion of platforms in place between the top of the stairwells and at the end of the bridge deck over Easton Rd. (see orange area in map above).
Due to concerns that the work on the topside of the bridge deck could generate construction debris below the bridge, flagging a single lane of traffic is required as a safety precaution. These restrictions will be in place starting Monday and run through Friday, April 18 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. with no weekend work.
All Regional Rail service will operate as normal weekdays during this scheduled work.

Nominate a Teacher for Teacher Appreciation Month
|
May is Teacher Appreciation Month! We want to take this time to recognize the most influential teachers within our community – and we need YOUR help to find them.
We are asking you to nominate your favorite teacher to be recognized throughout the month of May to celebrate their dedication to our kids and our communities.
Here’s where you can help! Send in the following information to RepNelson@pahouse.net: the teacher's first and last name, and the grade, subject and school they teach at (or taught at) – plus please let us know why this teacher is making a difference!
Thinking back on our own childhood, there is at least one teacher we can all remember who either changed our lives or changed our mindset on how we view the world – and now is our chance to say, “Thank You!”

Abington Township officials are alerting the communities surrounding SPS Technologies that scammers are targeting those who may be vulnerable, distressed, or concerned after the recent fire.
These scams may be in the form of phone calls and text messages from unknown numbers offering assistance, in-person visits from solicitors, and/or false job offerings on the internet.
In general, be cautious providing any personal or financial information to any individual or organization claiming to offer assistance, whether in-person, over the phone, or online. Please consult the Abington Township Fire Marshal’s Office’s press release for more details on potential scams and ways to stay safe.

The REAL ID enforcement deadline of May 7 is approaching. By this date, you will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license/photo ID card OR another form of federally acceptable ID (such as a valid passport or military ID) to board a domestic commercial flight or enter a federal building or military installation that requires ID.
This deadline only applies if you plan on doing any of these things on May 7. If you are flying domestically in August, for example, you do NOT need your REAL ID by May 7, but you will need it before your flight. Additionally, if you have a passport, that grants you the same access as a REAL ID would.
PennDOT is offering special dedicated times at driver license & REAL ID centers to help PA residents get their REAL ID if you decide it is right for you.
On Monday, April 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., PennDOT will be offering REAL ID hours at a number of local driver license and REAL ID centers, including the West Oak Lane driver license center, Huntingdon Valley driver license center, Norristown driver license & REAL ID center, and King of Prussia driver license & REAL ID center.
Further REAL ID Days and locations can be found on PennDOT’s website, as can information about which documents are required to obtain a REAL ID. Please reach out to my office with any questions.
