PA House Democrats Deliver: Safer, healthier, more equitable communities

(Dec 29, 2023)

HARRISBURG, Dec. 29 – As the House majority in 2023, the Pennsylvania House Democratic Caucus advanced measures to keep communities safer, healthier and make them better places to live for all residents. First, House Democrats championed legislation to strengthen public safety, including keeping 911 services operational, making Pennsylvania roadways safer for drivers and pedestrians, and recruiting more law enforcement professionals. 911 Centers serve residents and first responders 24/7/365 -- often during times of emergency. When funding for 911 Centers was at risk, House Democrats fought for a plan to secure funding to enable them to continue to serve the public and make improvements to the 911 system. Communities across Pennsylvania are struggling to fill police officer positions , but a plan introduced by Rep. Dan Williams, D-Chester, will update some outdated standards used to assess applicants that have made recruiting municipal police officers more difficult and imbalanced statewide. “Vacancies in local police departments hurt our communities and put us all at risk,” Williams said. “This measure will give our local police departments a tool to help solve their vacancies but is only a piece of the puzzle as we need to do more.” This comes after an announcement earlier this year that the Pennsylvania State Police was removing its college credit requirement on a trial basis to attract more Read more

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Williams’ bill to help recruit more police officers passes Pa. House

(Nov 16, 2023)

NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE State Rep. Dan Williams D-Chester County www.pahouse.com/ Williams Williams’ bill to help recruit more police officers passes Pa. House HARRISBURG, Nov. 15 – A bill that would help address Pennsylvania’s shortage of police officers, passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday. House Bill 863 , authored by state Rep. Dan Williams, D-Chester, would reduce the physical fitness standards required for enrollment in a municipal police academy in Pennsylvania. However, the previous standards still would have to be met in order to be employed as a police officer in Pennsylvania. A 2021 national survey conducted by the Police Executive Research Forum showed a 45% increase in retirements and an 18% increase in resignations over the previous year. Additionally, according to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, Pennsylvania has around 1,300 open positions across the state. “Vacancies in our local police departments put our communities at risk,” Williams said. “This legislation would bring more recruits into our police academies, while ultimately not lowering the physical fitness standards for employment as a municipal police officer in Pennsylvania.” House Bill 863 now heads Read more

Williams’ bipartisan bill to fight blight passes PA House of Representatives

(Jul 07, 2023)

NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE State Rep. Dan Williams D-Chester County www.pahouse.com/Williams Williams’ bipartisan bill to fight blight passes PA House of Representatives HARRISBURG, July 7 – A bipartisan bill that would give municipalities another tool to fight urban blight passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives today. Sponsored by Rep. Dan Williams, D-Chester, H.B. 859 would give a municipality the ability to deny permits to limited liability corporations that are delinquent on their taxes. Currently, municipalities may deny permits to individuals who are delinquent, but not LLCs. Williams said some bad actors are using this loophole to force municipalities to approve permits despite their delinquent status. The bill would also allow municipalities to deny permits to an LLC if one of the principals of the LLC has delinquencies in the municipality. “Every struggling community in Pennsylvania wants to fight blight and see their neighborhoods revitalized,” Williams said. “That revitalization includes ensuring there are safe, quality buildings owned by a reliable tax base.” The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
