HARRISBURG, Sept. 4 – State Rep. Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, announced today that the House Democratic Policy Committee will hold a public briefing on “The Vanishing Trial” film and the implications of Pennsylvania’s harsh sentencing laws on plea bargaining and trials. The briefing will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 in Room G-50 Irvis Office Building in Harrisburg. The media and public are urged to watch the livestream at www.pahouse.com/live . Sturla holds final day of 9th Annual Back to School Giveaway Saturday at Clipper Magazine Stadium

LANCASTER, Aug. 21 – State Rep. Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, said the final day of his 9th Annual Back to School Giveaway will occur from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 at Clipper Magazine Stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, special activities and walk-up registration were cancelled this year while nearly 700 students registered online. To ensure proper crowd control and social distancing, the event has run from Aug. 15-22 with designated days and time slots for registered families to walk up or drive up to get their student’s backpack filled with supplies, uniforms, shoes and masks. Sturla reappointed to Special Education Funding Commission

HARRISBURG, Aug. 26 – State Rep. Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster and Democratic Policy Committee Chairman, today announced his reappointment to the Special Education Funding Commission. “It is due to the important work of the Special Education Funding Commission and its reports that we have a better understanding of the long-term impact state funding has on the ability of schools to meet the needs of children with disabilities,” Sturla said. “I look forward to continuing to work on this commission, as well as the Basic Education Funding Commission, to ensure that together we are making the best recommendations for our children and increasing their chances at opportunities. It’s crucial that we take a strong interest in helping students achieve academically and fulfill their individual potential based on their needs.” The Special Education Funding Commission has held public hearings throughout the state starting in 2013, receiving testimony from dozens of witnesses, including students, parents, educators, and national experts. All of which emphasized the long-term impact of investments in schools to set up the highly complex and costly set of supports and services needed to address all children’s needs. Close to 320,000 children with disabilities, 18 percent of Pennsylvania students, receive special education services in Pennsylvania public schools. Sturla to host 8th annual Back to School Giveaway Sunday

LANCASTER, Aug. 22 – State Rep. Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, will hold his eighth annual Back to School Giveaway from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25 inside Lancaster Barnstormers’ Clipper Magazine Stadium, 650 N. Prince St. During the event, School District of Lancaster students in grades K-8 will receive a free haircut, backpack, uniform, shoes, and book while also enjoying music, food, games and community activities. Students will also be provided a free meal and free ticket to the 5 p.m. Lancaster Barnstormers game. Students must be in attendance and accompanied by an adult to receive items. Over 1,300 students have already registered to attend. Same-day registration will also be available.
