Sappey bestowed Foot Soldier of Justice Award by NAACP for championing trauma-informed education in PA

(Dec 18, 2019)

MEDIA, Dec. 18 – State Rep. Christina Sappey, D-Chester, received the prestigious Foot Soldier for Justice Award from the NAACP Media Area Branch on Saturday. Sappey was chosen for her demonstrated commitment to children’s education throughout Pennsylvania. In July, Gov. Tom Wolf signed legislation to implement trauma-informed education in schools throughout the commonwealth, largely thanks to a bill authored by Sappey. Sappey introduced H.B. 1415 to train teachers and administrators to recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma and how to formulate education-based policies, procedures and practices through trauma-informed approaches. During the budget process in June, Sappey’s bill was incorporated into S.B. 144 , which is now law. “Every child deserves a fair chance to succeed in the classroom,” Sappey said. “The passage of this legislation was certainly a triumph for our education system and all of Pennsylvania’s students coping with Adverse Childhood Experiences. I am so grateful for the positive response this bill has received, and I am honored to accept the Foot Soldier for Justice Award. I am committed to continuing my fight for students across the commonwealth and advocating for children who have experienced trauma. A trauma-informed approach in education now will ultimately give us a healthier adult population in the future.” More information on the award or trauma-informed education can be Read more

Sappey’s donation drive great success, benefits five charities

(Nov 22, 2019)

KENNETT SQUARE, Nov. 22 – State Rep. Christina Sappey held a charitable item donation drive on Saturday, Nov. 16, which received donations from over 100 local residents for the Brandywine SPCA, David’s Drive 831, the Chester County Food Bank, Marines Toys for Tots and Green Drop. “I am continually impressed by the love and generosity of the people in our community,” Sappey said. “These donations will help feed families, provide a child with a toy for the holidays and ensure the health of pets looking for their forever homes. Thank you to those who donated, your kindness will certainly go a long way.” Many attendees provided items to all the organizations on site. David’s Drive 831, a local veteran support organization, collected items for veterans receiving care at the Coatesville, Lebanon, and Southeastern Veterans Centers. "We ended up with a truckload of items that are already helping veterans in need. The generosity of the 158th demonstrates how much we care for veterans. Veterans deserve our support and they feel your kindness,” David Turner, founder and president of David’s Drive 831, said. “Thank you Representative Sappey and staff for giving David's Drive 831 the opportunity to show the veterans in this community that they are not forgotten, thank you!" Sappey shares PennDOT’s plan to reduce excessive traffic due to construction on Lenape Bridge

(Nov 22, 2019)

KENNETT SQUARE, Nov. 22 – State Rep. Christina Sappey, D-Chester, has shared an update regarding the excessive traffic at the Street Road and Pocopson Road intersection due to the construction occurring on Lenape Bridge, located on state Route 52. The narrow stone bridge over the Brandywine Creek is currently closed to traffic and is being restored by the state Transportation Department. This forces drivers to use state Route 926 or Pocopson Road, as there are few other detours to go around this bridge closure, causing unusually heavy traffic. Sappey noted that this detour causes extreme traffic jams to motorists traveling north and south on Pocopson Road, as well as state Route 926. Sappey said she has heard from constituents who have waited nearly an hour in traffic at this intersection, so she reached out to PennDOT and asked its officials to address this burden. “According to PennDOT, an advance left turn arrow for southbound Pocopson Road will be added by the beginning of next week. This will allot time for drivers to turn left before the northbound side of Pocopson Road gets a green light,” Sappey said. “This should help alleviate the burden of waiting in long lines just in time for the holidays as busy travel days are approaching.” PennDOT will also be monitoring other signalized intersections along the detour route to see if adjustments are needed there, as well. Sappey added that she will keep her constituents Read more

Supporting our First Responders

(Nov 01, 2019)

As a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, I am strongly advocating for greater support for our volunteer emergency service companies. Across the Commonwealth, first responder agencies are in dire need of volunteers. Our current economy has made it increasingly difficult for volunteer recruitment and retention. It is crucial that we address this concern now, as costs related to hired response teams would be detrimental for local municipalities. Recognizing the challenges facing our emergency service companies, in 2017 the legislature adopted Senate Resolution 6. This resolution created a statewide commission to analyze the volunteer shortage and develop recommendations. Recently, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives approved the following bills, based on the commission’s recommendations, to help these organizations address the critical volunteer shortage while assisting those who answer the call. The bills include: HB 1839 , HB 1705 : Property Tax Relief for Volunteers – active members of volunteer fire companies and non-profit ambulance companies listed on their primary residence’s property tax bills would be eligible for credits of up to 100% of their property taxes, depending on local ordinances and school districts. HB 1773 , HB 1786 : Student Loan Help for Volunteers – active members of volunteer fire companies and non-profit ambulance companies could get tuition assistance and Read more
