HARRISBURG, Oct. 29 – State Rep. Christina Sappey, D-Chester, has planned an in-person event to support southern Chester County communities in testifying against Aqua Pennsylvania Inc.’s proposed water rate increases of over 17% at a telephonic public input hearing. The in-person event hosted by Sappey and Rep. John Lawrence, to be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10 at the Penn Township building in West Grove, is happening in response to the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission’s Oct. 21 decision to not hold in-person hearings and instead hold six virtual hearings to collect input from the public on Aqua’s proposed increases. The purpose of the in-person event is to assist seniors and people with technological difficulties who would still like to testify. “Those without adequate access to the internet or comfort with technology deserve to be heard as well as those who do,” Sappey said. Sappey made the initial request for a public hearing through a letter to the PUC on Oct. 6 . “Hundreds of constituents have contacted me expressing strong opposition to Aqua’s increase request,” Sappey wrote. “Many of them are seniors living on fixed incomes and are still recovering from the financial impact of the pandemic. Harrisburg, Oct. 1 – State Rep. Christina Sappey today announced that two local school districts were awarded funding from the Emergency Connectivity Fund to help close the digital divide and homework gap. Kennett Consolidated School District was awarded $94,800 and West Chester Area School District was awarded $34,775. Created through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, the FCC’s Emergency Connectivity Fund is considered the nation’s largest single effort to ensure students have access to the digital devices and resources they need for the school year. The program will also help libraries offer their patrons internet connectivity and digital devices to continue their learning at home. “Having access to technology and the internet is a must for today’s students,” said Sappey, D-Chester. “I’m pleased to see these funds support our school districts, so that all students are better equipped to succeed.” A total of $20.5 million was awarded to 126 applicants, including 86 school districts, 29 schools and 11 libraries. Of the total, $15.7 million will be used for equipment and $4.9 million will be directed to securing internet service. Christina Sappey has introduced a resolution designating September 2021 as “International Underground Railroad Month” in recognition of the pivotal role that Pennsylvania played in the abolition movement during the 19th century via the Underground Railroad. “Pennsylvania, and Chester County in particular, played a crucial role in assisting enslaved people flee to freedom via the Underground Railroad,” said Sappey, D-Chester. “Our commonwealth was dotted and crossed with hundreds of safehouses, escape routes and hiding places. Who were the heroes of the Underground Railroad? Sappey was on hand for an award presentation to Hilltop’s owner Sean Hanrahan and Hilltop General Manager Heather Brydges, along with DCED Deputy Secretary Steven D’Ettore and CCEDC Chief Operating Office Mike Grigalonis. “Our locally owned restaurants are vital to our economy here in the 158 th , and they continue to experience serious hardships from the pandemic.
