Sappey announces over $275K in local Fire, EMS grants

KENNETT SQUARE, Oct. 16 – State Rep. Christina Sappey, D-Chester, today announced that several Fire Company and Emergency Medical Service grants were approved for local companies, totaling $276,203 to offset expenses accrued during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through Act 26, which passed the legislature with Sappey’s support, the state made $50 million in grants available to fire and emergency medical services organizations affected by COVID-19. The funding can be used for operational and equipment expenses including personal protective equipment, disinfecting expenses, apparatus repairs, utilities, insurance and lost revenue.

“This is great news for our hardworking first responders,” Sappey said. “These heroes are stepping up every single day to help protect all of us. It is through their self-sacrifice that we are safe during emergency situations. We need to make sure that they have the funds to keep up with demands and maintain top-of-the-line equipment to keep our communities safe.”

Pennsylvania Fire Commissioner Bruce Trego said: “Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our office has remained open to provide the necessary resources that our fire service and EMS personnel need to fulfill a critical public safety role throughout the commonwealth. Departments have been exceptionally patient during this process, as our office has worked through changing federal guidance dictating how these dollars can be spent.”
