PHILADELPHIA, June 7 – The Philadelphia House Delegation today stated that the group is closely following the death of a teenager killed in the city Sunday by a state trooper during a drag race on I-95. The organization expressed concern about issues involved in this incident as they could develop into more tragedies. Philadelphia House Delegation Chair Morgan Cephas indicated that it is essential that the state police and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office collaborate hand-in-hand for transparent scrutiny. HARRISBURG, April 11 – Citing February’s landmark Commonwealth Court ruling that Pennsylvania’s education funding system is unconstitutional, Speaker of the House Joanna McClinton, D-Phila./Delaware, said today that the state needs to act now to fix the inequitable system that has shortchanged a generation of students, and reappointed state Reps. Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, and Mary Isaacson, D-Phila., to serve on the state’s Basic Education Funding Commission. Sturla and Isaacson will join House Education Committee Chairman Pete Schweyer, D-Lehigh, on the commission. “These three lawmakers are proven leaders on education issues and true champions for our public schools and students,” McClinton said. “Pennsylvania’s shared future depends on a well-educated workforce, and we build that future today by ensuring our students thrive academically, socially and civically. State Rep. Mary Isaacson, along with state Sen. Nikil Saval, were instrumental in securing funding for the Fishtown-Kensington Business Improvement District’s Vision Plan Initiative. A grant for $72,750 was awarded to the Fishtown Kensington Area Business Improvement District to complete the project. “I am committed to bringing funding home to the district that will enhance the safety and quality of life of my constituents,” Isaacson said. “This award will go a long way to improve a vital transportation hub while also creating spaces for art and connection, highlighting local artists and vendors.” The legislators aid the program seeks to rejuvenate Front Street and Girard Avenue by activating and beautifying a transportation hub to illuminate, connect, and make this busy intersection safer and more accessible to the thousands who pass by daily. The upgrades also will include space under the Market-Frankford Line, which will be a combined space that merges art with community services. “Public transit and spaces that are safe, accessible and beautiful are core to upholding Philadelphians' right to freedom of movement,” Saval said. “This grant is an investment in the lives and livelihoods of the thousands of neighbors who pass through this space every day.
