HARRISBURG, Oct. 1 -- The Pennsylvania Society of Oncology and Hematology has recognized state Rep. Bridget M. Kosierowski, D-Lackawanna, with the 2021 Legislator of the Year Award in recognition of her strong advocacy for pediatric cancer research and her work to bring forward a bipartisan bill supporting the largest effort to fund pediatric cancer research in the commonwealth.
“Unfortunately, cancer knows no gender, race, or -- as the parent of a child who has battled leukemia can tell you first-hand -- no age,” Kosierowski said. “And, while I’m honored to be named the 2021 Legislator of the Year, I wish that pediatric cancer research wasn’t so vastly and consistently underfunded that it needed an advocate. Sadly, one in 250 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death for children under the age of 19. I’m committed to continue working with my colleagues to ensure better funding for pediatric cancer research so that Pennsylvanians will no longer have to worry about childhood cancer impacting their families.”
Representing more than 200 physicians and other healthcare professionals caring for cancer patients, the nonprofit seeks to aid in the improvement of hematologic and oncologic care for patients.
The award presentation was part of PSOH’s 2021 annual meeting held earlier today. Society President Dr. Arturo Loaiza-Bonilla was the doctor who presented the award.
