The South Hills Futures Fair is tomorrow!

Tomorrow marks the return of the South Hills Futures Fair, which I am hosting for the first time as a Representative alongside Rep. Jessica Benham.

The event at Castle Shannon Memorial Fire Hall, 3600 Library Road in Castle Shannon, runs from 5-8 p.m. and is focused on special education planning and post-secondary resources for students with disabilities and their families. This event is a chance to interact with education, employment, housing, social and recreational opportunities.

Each year, school districts throughout the South Hills partner with us on this great event. The school districts joining us for the Futures Fair this year are:

  • Mt. Lebanon
  • Upper St. Clair
  • Keystone Oaks
  • Brentwood Borough
  • Baldwin-Whitehall
  • Bethel Park
  • South Fayette
  • Carlynton
  • West Jefferson Hills
  • ACLD Tillotson School
  • Allegheny Intermediate Unit

In addition, we’ll have live musical performances by Band Together Pittsburgh, which creates music with people on the autism spectrum.

The Futures Fair is an excellent opportunity to get acclimated with these resources prior to the 13th Annual Disability & Mental Health Summit on May 7th. I hope to see you there!

IN THE COMMUNITY

Open House

Thanks to everyone who came out to my Open House last week! I was able to meet so many great people across the district and have fantastic conversations about what my office can provide.

You’re always welcome to visit the office at 650 Washington Road, Suite 102 in Mt. Lebanon to learn more about state government-related services and programs! You can also call the office at 412-343-3870.

Allegheny Intermediate Unit Legislative Panel

I was honored to join several of my colleagues from the House and Senate at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit Legislative Panel last night. It was amazing to meet so many energetic educators and stakeholders to talk about the future of public education in PA and how we can best meet the needs of every learner!

Allegheny League of Municipalities Conference

Last Friday morning, I joined Reps. Venkat, McAndrew, Kinkead, and Sen. Fontana for a panel discussion at the Allegheny League of Municipalities Conference at Seven Springs! Having recently become a local elected official, it was great to sit on the other side of the table to talk about legislation and budget issues impacting municipalities in Allegheny County.

Lincoln Elementary School 100th Anniversary

It was a pleasure to present a citation from the House of Representatives this past weekend, honoring the 100th anniversary of Lincoln Elementary School in Mt. Lebanon.

On an absolutely perfect afternoon, we celebrated the importance of Lincoln Elementary to the neighborhood – a treasure where multiple generations have gathered to learn and connect as a community. Here’s to another wonderful 100 years!

Disability & Mental Health Summit is fast approaching!

Register today to take part in the 13th Annual Disability & Mental Health Summit!

This one-of-a-kind event returns to CCAC’s Allegheny Campus on the North Side with a keynote presentation from Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Kevin Dougherty, breakout sessions throughout the day and a comprehensive legislative panel with state senators and representatives. Although some individual sessions have reached their capacity for preregistration, space for walk-ins may be available on the day of the event.

We’ll also have an Art Exhibit in collaboration with Creative Citizen Studios. I can’t wait to see all the unique works of art crafted by those with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Visit disabilitysummit.com to secure your registration today!

Applications open for FAFSA

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency is reminding higher education students that they can now complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. FAFSA is an easy way to help alleviate the costs of going to an institution like colleges, business schools and technical schools.

Applications are due by May 1 for many students, so don’t miss out on this opportunity! You can review the checklist for FAFSA submission at this link.

Make a plan to vote in the May 19 primary election!
