Mayes secures nearly $2.5 million for traffic safety projects

State grants support Larimer-Homewood Multimodal Greenway, Carlow University

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 25 – State Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes announced today nearly $2.5 million in state grant money has been awarded to improve local roadways and sidewalks.

“Investing in transportation infrastructure is investing in the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and all who travel through Pittsburgh,” said Mayes, D-Allegheny. “My colleagues and I are committed to driving funds toward projects like these that ensure folks can get to where they need to be safely and efficiently.”

Mayes said the following awards benefitting the 24th Legislative District were secured in collaboration with other Democratic lawmakers:

  • $1.25 million to support phase two of the Larimer-Homewood Multimodal Greenway Extension project, delivered in partnership with state Sen. Lindsey Williams.
  • $529,410 to Carlow University for sidewalk and crosswalk safety improvements, delivered in partnership with state Sen. Jay Costa.
  • $450,000 to the city of Pittsburgh for streetscape lighting improvements along Penn Avenue, delivered in partnership with Costa.
  • $250,000 to Walnut Penn Shady LP to make pedestrian safety upgrades along Penn Avenue delivered in partnership with Williams.

The grants were awarded from the Multimodal Transportation Fund, which is administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority and provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the commonwealth. Funds may be used for the development, rehabilitation and enhancement of transportation assets to existing communities, streetscape, lighting, sidewalk enhancement, pedestrian safety, connectivity of transportation assets and transit-oriented development.
