Madden announces $750K state grant for Pocono Family YMCA

STROUDSBURG, June 22 – Plans and efforts to upgrade the Pocono Family YMCA facility continue to move forward, with state Rep. Maureen Madden today announcing a $750,000 grant to support the project.
“For years, I have worked tirelessly with the YMCA, other local leadership and the Wolf administration to help secure funding for the YMCA because I know these are really good people doing really good things, and the greater Stroudsburg community will benefit,” said Madden, whose advocacy and support of the YMCA improvement project has helped generate more than $4.2 million in various grants.
“Our YMCA in Stroudsburg does so much good for the youth and the Monroe County region, and I really look forward to seeing how this structural renovation will eventually allow it to expand those efforts to meet the needs of our growing community,” Madden continued.
The latest batch of funding, via the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, was first announced Tuesday by Gov. Tom Wolf as part of 15 community, economic development and revitalization projects throughout Pennsylvania.
Wolf’s announcement indicated the funding for the Pocono Family YMCA project “will add new space to the existing facility.”
The facility upgrades and renovations have been a few years in the making, said Pocono Family YMCA President and CEO Scott Peckins, with up-to-date gyms, expanded child care service, new community spaces, aquatic center improvements, inclusive locker rooms and family changing areas, and additional parking spaces included in the plans. Project construction is expected to begin in 2023, he said.
“Just wonderful news for the greater Stroudsburg community and for all who appreciate what our Pocono Family YMCA has to offer,” Peckins said. “While we appreciate the history of our buildings – some of which were built more than a century ago – we look forward to our future and being able to serve a growing Monroe County with exciting and innovative structures and technology.
“We also express our deepest thanks to Representative Madden for her ongoing efforts to support the project that will enhance our commitment to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.”
While $2 million was awarded to the Y in the last round of RACP grants and another $1 million in earlier community grants, it was only earlier this month that Madden announced $537,399 for the Pocono Family YMCA via the Local Share Account funding allocated for Monroe County and other nearby counties for projects concerning public interest.
