Crozer-Chester Medical Center Officially Sold

Today I have an important update to share about the future of Crozer-Chester Medical Center and what the most recent developments may mean for our community. After so much bad news last year, a new owner closed on the sale of the hospital today. Prospect Medical Holdings, the California-based hedge fund that ran our hospital system into bankruptcy, no longer owns or controls the property.

Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland Borough has been purchased by Chariot Equities, in partnership with Allaire Health Services. The new owners have stated their plan to redevelop the campus and work toward restoring hospital and emergency services through a phased approach. Chariot Equities has stated that it plans to partner with a nonprofit hospital operator to restore healthcare services at the site and they are actively pursuing a partnership, with a goal of finalizing an operator agreement with a mission-aligned health system within six months.

We also learned on Friday that after the initial bidder on Springfield Hospital failed to close on the sale of that property, Prospect Medical Holdings is now in the process of selling Springfield Hospital to KQT Aikens Partners, the same local investor group that previously purchased Taylor Hospital last September. They have also been seeking a nonprofit healthcare operator to reopen services at Taylor Hospital.

If you want to read more about the new buyer of Springfield Hospital, you can read an article from Saturday’s Philadelphia Inquirer.

Like many of you, I know how deeply the loss of Crozer has impacted families, seniors, healthcare workers, and patients across Delaware County. My staff and I are still helping former Crozer employees who lost their benefits after the hospitals closed, while following every bankruptcy hearing in Texas for updates.

While today’s sale represents an important step forward, it will take time for Chariot Equities to raise the capital to implement their plan and secure a nonprofit operating partner. We will not see healthcare restored to the campus immediately.

I have been in close contact with the new buyers, local, county and state officials and will be closely monitoring each of these next steps. I will share updates as more information becomes available.
