Krueger to hold dog licensing event Tuesday, Jan. 21

BROOKHAVEN, Jan. 14 – State Rep. Leanne Krueger and the Delaware County Treasurer’s Office are holding a special event on Tuesday to help residents get their dogs licensed under state law.

The event will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 at the Brookhaven Municipal Center at 2 Cambridge Road in Brookhaven. Registration is required to obtain a time slot for the licensing process by calling Krueger’s office at 610-534-6880 or by emailing RepKrueger@pahouse.net.

“Our furry friends are important to our families, and that’s why we want to keep them happy and safe,” Krueger said. “Not only is it state law, but having your dog licensed makes it much easier to return your dog to you if it’s found. I partner with the treasurer’s office each year to help residents get the licenses they need to keep their dogs protected.”

State law requires that all dogs, 3 months or older, be licensed. Failure to license a dog could result in a fine up to $500 in addition to court costs.

Residents are encouraged to complete the required forms before heading to the event, but forms can be obtained there. Related forms available online include:

Payment will be due at the event and checks should be made payable to “Delaware County Treasurer.” The cost for an annual license is $8.70 with a reduced rate of $6.70 for seniors and residents with disabilities. Lifetime licenses are $52.70 with a reduced rate of $36.70 for seniors and residents with disabilities.

Krueger said revenue from dog license sales funds the work of dog wardens, allowing dog wardens to keep communities safe as they:

  • Inspect more than 2,500 state-licensed kennels, at least twice a year.
  • Investigate and prosecute illegal kennel operations known as "puppy mills."
  • Control the spread of infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Track more than 600 dangerous dogs.
  • Pick up stray or abandoned dogs.
  • Pay back shelters for holding stray dogs.
  • Pay back farmers for damages to livestock caused by dogs or coyotes.

Dogs will not be permitted to enter the municipal center building. More information can be obtained by calling Krueger’s office at 610-534-6880.
