Election deadlines, Harrisburg updates, and more!

Dear Neighbor,

Thank you to all who joined us at my License Plate Restoration Event last Thursday, which I hosted alongside Sen. Tim Kearney and Rep. David Delloso. We had a great turnout, and as always, we appreciate the partnership of the Ridley Township Police Department in making this event such a success.

The past two weeks have been especially busy in Harrisburg, where the House has been hard at work passing important legislation for Pennsylvanians. I also want to share updates on what’s been happening both in the Capitol and here in the district, along with reminders about several upcoming community events.

I also want to remind voters that today, May 12, is the deadline to apply for a mail-in or absentee ballot for the upcoming May 19 primary election. Applications must be received by the county election office by 5 PM today.

At the Capitol

Last week, my House colleagues & I passed legislation to protect kids by requiring mandated reporters to report suspected child sexual abuse materials or AI child sexual abuse materials (HB 2474) and improve prosecution of internet crimes against children (HB 1098). We also helped kids by setting up a new state commission that will develop a plan to provide vision exams and glasses at little or no cost for all students who need them (HB 1077). We cut costs for tenants by capping rental application fees (HB 558).

Advocating Fair Funding for Pennsylvania Schools

Last Wednesday, I was happy to meet with the Children’s First K-12 Education Team during PA Schools Work Advocacy Day. Chester-Upland School Board Director Dr. Tasliym Morales and students from the Chester-Upland School District met with me in my office to discuss the importance of fair and equitable funding for students and public school districts across the Commonwealth.

It was great to hear directly from students and education advocates about the challenges schools are facing and the need to ensure every child has access to a quality public education, regardless of their ZIP code. I always appreciate the opportunity to have these important conversations and to continue advocating for resources that support our students, teachers, and schools.

Primary Election Day – Tuesday, May 19

My office will be closed on Tuesday, May 19 in observance of the Primary Election.

We will reopen on Wednesday, May 20 at 9 AM.

Town Hall with Congresswoman Scanlon, State Reps. Lisa Borowski and Jennifer O’Mara

I also want to share an upcoming town hall hosted by Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, along with state Reps. Lisa Borowski and Jennifer O'Mara. This is a great opportunity to hear updates on what’s happening both in Washington and Harrisburg, as well as to ask questions about issues impacting our communities.

The town hall will take place on Tuesday, May 26 at 6:30 PM at the Delaware County Community College Academic Building – Large Auditorium. Doors will open at 6:00 PM.

 Advanced registration is required.

Honoring history at Green Lawn Cemetery

On Monday, I visited Green Lawn Cemetery in Chester Township with Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, Councilwoman Joanne Phillips, the Friends of Green Lawn Cemetery Board of Directors, and students and staff from Williamson College of the Trades during their annual week of community service.

Williamson College has been assisting with ongoing restoration efforts at the cemetery, helping to preserve this important historic site in our community. It was great to see so many people working together to support these efforts and to recognize the importance of preserving local history.

I appreciate the continued dedication of the Friends of Green Lawn Cemetery, and everyone involved in this meaningful work.

Helping residents replace damaged license plates in Ridley Township

Last Thursday, I joined state Rep. David Delloso and state Sen. Tim Kearney for our license plate restoration event in Ridley Township. We were able to help residents replace damaged or hard-to-read license plates at no cost.

A big thank you to the Ridley Township Police Department for assisting with PennDOT paperwork and helping direct traffic throughout the event. We’re also grateful to everyone who came out and took advantage of this helpful service for our community.

Important Programs & Services

Are you ready to vote?

Whether you’re voting by mail ballot or in person at the polls on Primary Election Day, it’s important that you make your voice heard. Note these important dates:

  • May 12th – Last day to apply for a mail ballot: vote.pa.gov/mailballot. Make sure your application is received in the county election office by 5 PM TODAY.
  • May 19th – Election Day. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Completed mail ballots must be received by 8 p.m.: vote.pa.gov/polls

Reminder: Because Pennsylvania has a closed primary, only registered Democrats and Republicans can vote for their party’s respective nominees in the primary election.

If you have a mail ballot, you can return it using one of the secure ballot drop boxes located throughout Delaware County or deliver it directly to the Delaware County Election Office. Drop boxes have varying hours, with 18 open to receive ballots 24/7 and 11 with limited hours as noted in the link above. Please note that some of the drop boxes are only open from 10am-4pm so check the link before you go.

What drivers need to know about Paul Miller’s Law

Beginning Friday, June 5, enforcement of Pennsylvania’s hand-free driving law, known as Paul Miller’s Law, will officially begin. The law prohibits drivers from using a handheld cell phone while operating a vehicle, including while stopped at a red light or sitting in traffic.

Paul Miller’s Law is named in honor of a PennDOT worker who was tragically killed by a distracted driver in a work zone. Over the past year, law enforcement has focused on education and warnings to help drivers adjust to the new law. Beginning June 5, however, police may issue fines starting at $50 for violations.

Grants available for electric vehicle charging stations

PennDOT is now accepting applications for grants for electric vehicle charging stations. Contractors installing publicly accessible community chargers may apply by August 21. The grants can be used to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain charging stations across Pennsylvania.

For more information, visit the PennDOT Website.
