NORRISTOWN, June 4 -- Following the tragic shooting that claimed the life of a 15-year-old Norristown resident and the subsequent lockdown at Norristown Area High School, state Rep. Greg Scott issued the following statement:
"Norristown, enough is enough. What happened last night was a horrific tragedy.
“A young person is dead. Another young person now faces serious criminal charges. Families are grieving, students are hurting, and an entire community has been shaken. Whatever the circumstances, an incident like this traumatizes our community and impacts all of Norristown.
“Today's lockdown at Norristown Area High School only deepened the fear, anxiety, and uncertainty being experienced by students, parents, educators, and residents across our community. No child should have to learn in fear. No family should have to wonder whether their loved one will make it home safely.
“The young people of Norristown deserve leaders who are urgently focused on developing and implementing real solutions. Far too many young lives have been lost, and we cannot allow this level of violence to become accepted as normal.
“I am calling on Norristown Municipal Council and the Norristown Police Department to convene a community stakeholder meeting and immediately begin developing a comprehensive youth violence prevention strategy. Addressing this crisis requires intentional collaboration, strategic partnerships, and a shared commitment to action. I will be reaching out personally to council and police leaders to facilitate these discussions and get the work started -- we can't wait any longer.
“Leaders at every level of government, alongside clergy, educators, community organizations, families, and residents, must come together to create a coordinated plan that provides meaningful support, resources, opportunities, and intervention for young people before violence occurs.
“Nothing stops a bullet better than a job. We must invest in workforce development, mentorship, educational opportunities, recreation, mental health resources, violence intervention programs, and pathways that help young people see a future worth striving for. These are the investments I fight for in Harrisburg, and I want to be sure my work there is informed by all our local voices.
“Our goal must be to build a coordinated system of care that addresses the immediate needs of our youth while helping them recognize their potential, envision a brighter future, and believe in the possibilities that exist for their lives.
“There is no single solution to youth violence, but there is one thing we know for certain: Doing nothing is not an option. The time for conversations without action has passed. Our community deserves urgency. Our families deserve safety. And our young people deserve every opportunity to succeed.
“We owe them nothing less."
