HARRISBURG, Sept. 21 – State Rep. Liz Hanbidge, D-Montgomery, today announced the awarding of $206,669 in Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program grant funding to Lower Gwynedd and Whitpain Townships to enhance existing outdoor recreational space, and propel forward plans to redevelop community parks.
The funding was made available through the Commonwealth Financing Authority and will be used to cover the costs of installing new energy efficient, solar LED lighting in the parking lot areas of Wentz Run Park in Whitpain Township, as well as creating a master plan to revitalize two township parks in Lower Gwynedd Township. Whitpain Township received $131,669 and Lower Gwynedd received $75,000 in this latest round of funding.
“Providing safe, well-maintained outdoor recreational space is the keystone to a healthy, active community,” Hanbidge said. “These grant dollars will go toward ensuring Montgomery County continues upholding our excellent reputation of investing in our shared community space.
“The exciting news that this funding will get us one step closer to two revitalized parks in Lower Gwynedd Township is a breath of fresh air. I applaud this funding and look forward to these envisioned projects becoming tangible, community-driven assets.”
Lower Gwynedd Township Supervisor Danielle Duckett welcomed this influx in grant funding to rejuvenate two of the community parks.
“Lower Gwynedd is thrilled to receive this grant. With the change in leadership on the board this year, there has been an emphasis on planning for the future and this funding will allow us to generate a master plan for the long overdue redevelopment of two of our existing parks — Pen-Ambler Park and Oxford Park,” Duckett said.
“The master plan will also address the creation of new trail connections from the Penllyn train station to Ambler Yards to promote walkability and the use of public transportation for those who live, work, and play in Lower Gwynedd.”
Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program funds can be used to develop, rehabilitate and improve public parks, recreation areas, greenways, trails and river conservation.
