Dear Neighbor,
You likely have seen the news that yesterday, Prospect Medical Holdings announced it intends to start closure proceedings for Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital.
This development is unwelcome and unacceptable, and I am livid over the callous disregard for you and our neighbors. Typical of private equity, Prospect has never put into play any of their own money; instead they sold off the hospital system’s assets to cover the purchase price and looted the rest for their own profit, likely taking over-blown salaries and bonuses to avoid responsibility and taxes.
I earnestly believe that ultimately this is a failure of government. We as a nation, through leaders we elected long ago – and guided by insurance industry influences – decided that a national health care system would be unsustainable. Nothing could be further from the truth, but the insurance industry, through their dealings with elected officials, painted a picture that first generation immigrants and minorities were inferior beings, prone to poor health and likely to overburden a government-administered health care plan. Hence, we have no national health care system – the exception, of course, that government employees, active duty servicemembers, veterans, and Medicaid/Medicare recipients all enjoy a version of nationalized healthcare at the expense of the taxpayers. This is deservedly so, and is a sensible, cost-effective system that all taxpayers could enjoy if we had the political will.
I'm working with Delco's other state and local elected officials to support every avenue possible to prevent these closures from going forward, and to prepare solutions to fill in the gaps for those of you, both patients and employees of the system, who would be impacted should they proceed. Here is part of the joint statement we issued yesterday:
|
"Private equity’s decimation of Crozer is an abomination. What these corporate raiders did to our hospitals should be criminal. Prospect lined its pockets while tearing apart a vital healthcare institution and must be held accountable. The healthcare system in America is fundamentally broken, and Crozer’s destruction is just the latest tragic example of that failure. As Crozer’s collapse proves, privatization and for-profit healthcare are not the solution—they are the problem."

A judge has ordered another hearing on Sunday for a potential final reconciliation, and our next steps will depend on that decision. The Delaware County Health Department has created a special webpage to convey all of the latest developments, and I will keep you updated as well.
Sincerely,

Now’s your chance to give the state your feedback on transportation
|
PennDOT and the State Transportation Commission (STC) is asking Pennsylvanians to take a survey about your transportation needs and how they could be better met: https://survey.talkpatransportation.com/#/Survey
Every two years, PennDOT and STC update their 12-Year Program (TYP). As part of this update process, they use a Transportation Survey and an Online Public Forum to collect public input. They will document, review and use the public feedback provided to help identify needs and prioritize transportation projects in the TYP.
